Speaking of "peacocking" I was out with two mates and one of their friends for a couple of beers last weekend. Somehow, the guy managed to shoe-horn his salary into the conversation within the first 2 or 3 mins of talking to him and then, when he found out what I do, started trying to get my salary out of me subtly. Very embarrassing and I won't be meeting up with him again.

Your salary/things aren't what make you who you are, anyone who solely bases their impressions of people on their earning potential is usually quite a shallow and insecure person.
I agree wholeheartedly with your 2nd point, but why were you so uncomfortable discussing your salary?

You were already discussing work related matters. Did he ask where you lived? If he did, would you have been offended if he asked how much you pay in rent or what % interest you pay on your mortgage?

I understand that these things are considered impolite, but why?

Why the hell should someone I've met for the first time need to know my salary? Or for that matter, why should anyone apart from my mortgage provider and the government?

Haha, I actually do and he seemed like the type that would have been very much making up for it with other boasts. Not that I could actually give a st. He did lease a nice CLS though smile

Yeah but are you a yuppie wkstain? hehe
Or, depending on age, could you be a yuppie's wkstain? (i.e. a child of the 80's smile )

This whole discussion is why the British reticence to actually discuss salary is so pathetic really. The mere fact that people don't mention what they earn, ends up inflating it into the huge issue where it becomes stupidly important as to where in the pecking order you and your family sit. When it's actually something that can arise in conversation, it instantly stops being taboo and exciting and in-fact ends up rarely being discussed because it's actually a rather dull subject.

Thus I could ask my friends what they earn, or even someone I meet at a party - and they would tell me quite happily, I don't because it really doesn't matter and, at least in civilised circles, isn't one of the measures by which people are judged.

You're the one sounding jealous now. hehe

Do you not like the idea that my working class uncle is more wealthy than you?

And who are you judge whether they earned the house they live in? My uncle built that house with his own hard graft, so i don't need some overpaid yuppie wkstain like you telling me that he hasn't earned it.

A lot of people work hard in life, but certain obnoxious people like to believe that they work harder than others, just because their salary is higher and they get stung for more tax.
Duly reported to mods.

Bored with your drivel.
Don't be so childish. The man clearly insulted my relatives, so my response was proportionate and appropriate.

If you're bored with my 'drivel', don't read it.

Dictionary definition of 'yuppie:

a young college-educated adult who has a job that pays a lot of money and who lives and works in or near a large city.

I'm struggling to understand why this is a bad thing.

Well I suppose having now seen the dictionary definition then yes I guess I am!

BUT you'd have to define what a lot of money is. What I class as a lot of money may not be what our friend does.

No I did not. My own parents also rode the boom like it sounds like yours did.

I am certainly not jealous at all, I've worked hard to not need their inheritance, but should I get it, so be it, but just because someone built a house, or whatever else, it doesn't mean that they worked hard for it.

The reason people like that don't make noises is likely because most of their cash is tied up in the house they're sitting in. Don't you remember 'The fking fulfords' ?

Don't be so pathetic.

Why should it be made a big issue or taboo subject?

He's not asking you to flop you willy onto the table so he can measure length and circumference. He's asking a couple of very dry financial questions to educate himself about mortgages and earning potential.

Some of my friends openly discuss credit card debts and current 0% deals that they've taken advantage of. Is this a taboo subject as well?

If not, why is it different to discussing other financial matters.

I'm not college educated so not a full yuppie but I have a Rolex so I'm keeping up with the Joneses - therefore does this make me a 'keepy uppie'?

I discuss financial matters with very close friends and my immediate family, not with people I've met for the first time.

I get the impression that if H22 spent as much time working than he does arguing with everyone on the internet, he'd have been more successful in life and thus earnt more.

At least I earn one billion ugandan dollars a second, my manager doesn't care if i'm polishing my rolex or sipping cocktails by the pool, and it's quite funny seeing someone getting increasingly irate AND earning fk all wink

I'm not sure that you should be allowed to partake, Cotty, as you eat slightly more than an average third world country consumes per week and are therefore, in H22 logic, relatively well paid (ie. more than him), and have the classification 'yuppie'. biggrin

We're going to run it until no one earns less than the national average wage.

Hopefully a decade or more I'm looking forward to updates on the 10 year plan house purchase.
