If they wanted to, my aunt & uncle could remortgage or downsize, then have a few hundred thousand to show off with, but they won't.
Bet you they will when the old age medical bills start cranking up...

then its bang goes your house purchase plan.....
you're not even close, badger. They have 4 children & 13 grandchildren.

Thanks for raising the issue of my relatives ill health. My uncle recently had a stroke, but he's recovering well. Stay classy.

I can't think of a single female friend who earns less than her partner, but this is not a random sample, so your experiences may be different.

And I'm far too poor - no one would ever ask me for £10. wink
I've noticed that's almost a 'class' thing - ordinary girls we know who have done good and become a doctor, dentist and solicitors, have married ordinary lads who really haven't done that well for themselves.

The daughters of more wealthy families who are often pretty dim, despite expensive educations, have generally married blokes in high paid jobs.
the classic wife earns more than husband is where an 'ordinary' girl goes into a 'pink collar profession' such as Teaching (especially primary) or Nursing / Physio/ OT (i don;t know whatthe stats are for AHPS but boys are out numbered about 6 to 1 in Nursing across the register as a whole ) where an income around the median is easily achieved without promotion ( rather by passing the competency gateways that allow incremental progression)

In my company we snail mail monthly pay slips so it's not hard to know exactly how much take home someone gets.

I personally only care about how much I earn but agree with other poster on top, there are a lot of jealous people out there.

Where my relatives live is no secret to my family. The fact that they built or bought their 5 bedroom family home 30 years ago, watched the property multiply in value and have paid off most of the mortgage is no secret either.

The areas they live in are very desirable. None of my older relatives are show offs. They are humble and don't hold some of the disgusting, snobby views that i see on here. They don't hold these views because they see their own children and grandchildren struggling to afford a house and competing for jobs in a competitive market.

So no, they're not peacocking or bragging.
What your relatives have done is similar to what most other people have done.

So why is it that you consider other people to be braggarts and peacocks but your relatives are hardworking humble "salt of the earth" types?

A tad hypocritical, I would suuggest.
Not really.

Most people didn't buy a plot of land & build their house from scratch with raw materials and their own skills & labour, plus they only have the one house, which may be subject to inheritance tax.

Dictionary definition of 'yuppie:

a young college-educated adult who has a job that pays a lot of money and who lives and works in or near a large city.

I'm struggling to understand why this is a bad thing.
Amongst yuppies it probably isn't.

Amongst normal people it is.

I'm astounded people actually use the word. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say yuppie in actual real life!

Never have I ever come across someone with such a massive chip on their shoulder either. Did some posh people beat you up with their polo sticks once H22?

Seeing as this is piston heads, what would you say if one of your friends bought a new 458 or mclaren? Disgust or appreciation?

In order to avoid being a yuppy wkstain you have to build your own and only house with your bare hands.

Use of builders is prohibited purchase of existing buildings is banned

Sorry anyone without building skills, E.G brain surgeons, disabled, teachers, nurses, chiefs et all are all wkstains..

Cool glad we've got that clear.

I can't be a yuppie, too old and not enough wealth to flaunt. Don't mention the Lotus and I think im fine.hehe

I remember hearing it in the 80's. I think some people admired it, they aspired to be a yuppie. I think its a bit like the Harry Enfield sketch loadsamoney

"Sometimes the satire would backfire. Left wing comic Harry Enfield was projected to unprecedented success on the back of only a few brief appearances on the show Friday Night Live as the character Loadsamoney in 1987 (pictured). The character was supposedly a plasterer grown rich on the Yuppie boom and reportedly inspired by images of London football fans taunting more impoverished northerners by waving wads of cash at them. Opposition leader Neil Kinnock was soon referring to a "Loadsamoney society". But like Alf Garnett, Loadsamoney became a hero to some. Enfield complained when The Sun newspaper used an image of Loadsamoney to support a bingo promotion and ultimately killed off the character in 1989".

My wife calls me a faceless european bureaucrat.

I'm not sure that's a compliment.......

She also calls my office "nerd creche" and watches The Big Bang Theory to see what my life is like....!

You build an excellent strawman, i'll give you that.

Badger, you claim to have 3 properties so i'm guessing you rent 2 of them out to 'the poor', so i'd like to place you in a special category marked "Boasting parasite wkstain".

I hope you don't mind.

5 to be exact but only 2 are rented one to grads making there way in the city (yuppy wkstains to you, hard-working educated young people and future of society to every one else) and one is quite large so I'd call them solvent and location mobile professionals (E.G yuppy wkstains to you).

I tend to live in the cribs before I rent them out so they are all pretty nice, poor couldn't afford them.

In fact the only poor I see here it you.

Don't worry you're pretty little head I have no problem with titles, I've always said at work I don't care what you call me I care what you pay me..

You should take that advice on board, you know help you with your goals.

Well it sounds like you are jealous.

What's your criteria for 'working hard' then?
If "Buying the land and building a house with your bare hands" doesn't count as hard work, then i'm not sure what does.

Is it only high-earning "hardworking" yuppies that deserve a house in this day & age? Maybe you should decline the inheritance if you think your parents didn't earn it.

If they wanted to, my aunt & uncle could remortgage or downsize, then have a few hundred thousand to show off with, but they won't because they're not flash and they're a different species to the type of people who lurk in the darker corners of PH * , waiting for an opportunity to willy wave with gay abandon.

  • (unashamedly shallow and materialistic middle-aged people and consumerist barbarian generation Y yuppies..)
Some people are modest and humble. Others are clearly not and love to shout about how successful they are. I have a lot of time for the former and no respect for the latter.
Why would I be jealous? I still am not sure why you would think that. I already said my own parents did the same thing and did fine for money without the house increase.

Building a house now and making fk all, and not being mortgage free, is that just as hard work? Or is it only hard work when you ride a wave through no input of your own?

You should tell your aunt and uncle they can't take it with them.

I work hard, I earn good money. It's not my fault if others also work hard but don't earn good money for it. That is a pointless pursuit in my eyes.
