Had to LOL last night.

Went to see 'How to Train your Dragon 2' at our local Cineworld.

Wife got a large popcorn, Pepsi and a bag of sweets (which came to over a tenner - but that's a side issue).

Sitting watching the trailers and started to eat the popcorn - but after getting a couple of handfuls down the bag - it became apparent that the popcorn was from the dregs at the bottom of the tray (mostly small crumbs and lots of unpopped corn).

Wife promptly takes it back and asks for a replacement.........which she is reluctantly given.......but as the guy behind the counter hands over the replacement - he says:

"I have left some out because you have already eaten some"

Sure enough - the replacement bag was filled to about an inch below the top of the bag......rofl

I didn't know the margins on popcorn were so tight. I guess we should have been angry - but instead both the wife and I found it immensely funny.

Anyone else have stories of jobsworthiness that you just have to laugh at.

iirc popcorn has just about the highest margin on any product sold anywhere in the world, second only to perfume I believe!

I'm sure it's something crazy like £1 for the huge bags that the cinemas empty into their window display thingies.

It came up on here, in a 'what's the easiest way to make £xxx' threads.

I remember buying tickets (4) and some "refreshments" I was close to 60 quid from memory after everything.

To be fair though- movie theatres make screw all on films. The studios make the money leaving the theatres to make their end via popcorn. I remember years ago i took my own food when i was a student and back then you had the boy with the flashlight. He came up to me to inspect my food and demanded i discard it or leave. lol

How can cinemas not make money from the films? At about £8 PER PERSON they could be making nearly a grand per showing for the latest films.

I rarely go to the cinema anymore as it is such a rip off.

I've never "got" popcorn. As you say, ridiculously high mark up on a "food" that tastes like salty cardboard.

I do dislike jobsworths even more than I dislike cardboard. I hope you laughed in their face.

The cinema near me charges £15 per ticket for an iMax film. I don't go very often; usually when the other half wants to go out and do something...

And this is why people don't go to the Cinema these days.

Most people have a big TV, an adequate 5.1 system can be installed quite cheaply, so there really is no need.
Microwave some popcorn and and enjoy (but be careful the popcorn doesn't catch on fire like it does if you aren't careful! eek )

If anyone goes to Cineworld who isn't a company director rolling with fifties then take note of this from the Cineworld website:

Cineworld have a strict NO HOT FOOD OR ALCOHOL policy. We reserve the right to refuse customers entry into the screens with hot food or alcohol bought outside the premises. All our cinemas display the necessary signage, advising customers of this policy.

As a food operator we offer a wide range of drinks and snacks to satisfy our customers but also protect our cinema furnishings and customers clothing. Not all movie-goers are considerate of others in their snack choices and we have needed to set clearer guidelines on what is appropriate.

Plus, you hopefully don't have to sit next to a stranger, some tt kicking the back of your chair etc.

I like the cinema, but at the same time hate it. I want to see the new inbetweeners film, but know it's going to be packed, so don't want to go lol.

If I ever want to see a flick on the big screen (less and less these days really), I tend to go lunchtime on a Sunday. Tends to only ever be one other person in the entire cinema, so they don't really sit next to you. smile

We go to the Broadway Cinema in Letchworth quite a lot (an independent cinema - funded from the Letchworth heritage fund) - Its a great cinema with a fantastic screen, £5 a ticket for mid week showings (even at that price you can still get 2 for 1 on orange Wednesdays) ........and they have a bar biggrin

Only reason we didn't go there last night was because they only have 3 screens and had stopped showing this particular movie.

I dont buy any food drink when I go to the cinema because its a rip off. If they just charged normal prices I would buy popcorn/drinks/icecream and so would more people.

So the question is would they make more money if they lowered their prices?

What an absurd statement.

I think they are saying the cheesy nacho sauce is made of plastic so will clean up easily.
