Erm - really? Surely something is only "deposited" at the tip once you place it in the relevant container and leave.

The act of removing something from your car and placing it on the ground isn't sufficient for it to be considered "tipped" is it?

Are you going to argue that in court against a lawyer?

I would agree that the act of writing down registrations and then actually reporting it would be jobsworth though. But warning someone against taking the bike could be seen as saving someone from prosecution.

Bloke A has already given the bike to the tip...

So? He changed his mind, I don't suppose anyone gave him a receipt.

Well yes actually. There are many occasions where I (and i'm sure other people) have removed extraneous items from the car that would hinder removing the items to be disposed of (parcel shelf, car seat etc).

These would usually be placed on the ground next to the car - whilst the items to be tipped are placed in the relevant container. The items not to be disposed of are then returned to the car.

Never had an issue with doing that and never considered that it could be an issue.

Until the items to be disposed of are placed into the relevant container, indicating their disposal - they still belong to me surely - and up until the point I place them into the container and leave (or hand them to a waste operative) - I reserve the right to change my mind.

I haven't found a single recycling centre that has a stated policy of "things placed on the ground are belong to us"

They would have a lot of tyres, if they did.

The OP about the bike in the tip did specify it was placed amongst the other bikes for disposal...

Come on the tip guy was just trying it on. Where do you think the money would have gone? Straight in his pocket.

See, this is why I always argue with lawyers.

You are probably right in the letter of the law, but you wouldn't have a hope of being actually convicted if it got to court, which it wouldn't, as common sense trumps legal idiocy.

I didn't. If they tried to pursue a legal case, the local council would have a new one ripped open by the Daily Mail and their local paper quicker than you can say "stepping down to pursue other career options".

I take great pleasure in calling lawyers' bluff on a regular basis.

Well - since the tips don't define exactly what "disposed of" means - I maintain that you have the right to change your mind.

It's one thing for people to enter a facility and start removing items that never belonged to them - there are several good reasons to prevent this - no least of which is the safety aspect.

But surely it would be plain jobsworthiness not to allow people to change their mind about disposing of an item whilst they are still with the item in question.

I bet the bike was going on Ebay..........I often wonder how much serviceable stuff ends up on sites like that.

You often see workers at the tip taking 'reasonable looking' items off people and carefully placing it to one side. scratchchin

I am having to deal with the county council a lot at the moment over issues with my kids school. You want jobsworths then they have everyone else beaten. Their meaning in life is to interpret rules then stick to it no matter what.

Council:Your sons travel is arranged by the transport department. You'll need to wait for them to get in touch, takes 2 weeks
Me: Roll on two weeks, heard nothing, call them back.
Council: Oh well you havent submitted the transport request form.
Me:You never sent me the form.
Council: Ah you never asked me to send the form.
Me: I didnt know I needed a form.
Council: Its not my job to tell you what forms you need, you have to ask me what form you need and I would have told you
me: That doesnt even make sense

Council: We have agreed and allocated the funding for your sons transport now we have received your form
Me: Great ! So how do we arrange it
Council: We send this form to the transport department. They decide if they want to actually offer the transport or not
me: But we have agreed he needs it and you have the money allocated for it
Coucil: ah but its still up to the transport manager to decided if he thinks he should provide it
me: Why is it up to him - and what if he decides arbitrarily that he doesnt want to provide it
Council: Its up to him because thats his job - if declines it he just returns the form
Me: and then what
Council: oh we just ring him and tell him to do it anyway
Me: So why dont you just ring him and tell him now ?

I have a lot of these stories. Its unbelievable the lengths they will go to not to help you.

At the tips around here they have shipping containers full of goods you can buy from the tip employees. I think the proceeds are supposed to go to charity nowadays but who knows. When I was younger the sale of goods deposited supplement the meagre income of the employees there.

How can cinemas not make money from the films? At about £8 PER PERSON they could be making nearly a grand per showing for the latest films.

I rarely go to the cinema anymore as it is such a rip off.
About 15 years ago I was meeting the manager of a big cinema complex and he told me that in the half term week they'd take £25,000. Probably nearer £40,000 now. Doesn't sound that much for half term.
