As some will know,2years ago I lost my beloved mum. Now my dad has been diagnosed with incurable liver cancer. In between these two events I have started playing electric guitar again, aquiring a 50watt amp with effects
And an effects pedal that does things I can only dream of .
In my escape from reality time I play guitar really loudly using all the effects and sounding far better than my very limited playing ability .it takes me back to my carefree teenage years for a brief respite from the inevitable outcome.
Why does it feel so guilty and not grown up ?

Hey man, everyone needs an outlet, a hobby or something to just enjoy whilst having some time to themselves.

Nothing to feel guilty about there my friend.

My advice would be don't be guilty, play loud and be proud. We all need our releases in life.

Best of luck with it all.

I would not worry about the guilt of not growing up, I do not feel grown up the majority of the time!

It must be hard at the moment with what is going on and as said everyone needs a outlet of some kind. I used to go out on my bike but working away from home in the week I'm finding it hard to do and I can feel it building up the need to do something.

I agree with these chaps, only I would suggest getting bigger amp and making more noise! No guilt In having an outlet in tough times.

I lost both my parents when I was in my mid 20's and decided who gives a fk what folk think - just do what makes you happy mate.

Keep your chin up.

Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional. Take it from me, I know. I am 54 going on 22.

Eta: my amp is 90 watts and I am a crap player smile

For those that ask I am 59 and drive a 300+ bhp t5 and letch at anything with a pulse over 16 , most females say I am a good guy and will stop and pose infront of my camera . Dad has been a musician all his adult life , and thiß is something we have discussed at length
And decided that nothing is finer than bringing pleasure through music.
Just me thinking I don't match up to the high standards of his past. ( ex forces musician )

It doesn't matter how good, or bad you play.

Play loud, and play proud.

And yes I have been playing and much alcohol has been consumed and it feels good to hit that loud pedal on the amp ( very good headphones!)

Try to find other non grown up musicians to play with as well, that really helps...I've just got back from a band rehearsal playing with various 45-60 year old musicians and while playing I feel like I'm 17 again jamming with my band mates.

I've recently bought an electronic drum kit since our drummer kept letting us down (I'm a guitarist mostly) and I'm really enjoying this now too. Even if we sound crap to anyone listening outside the door, we just really enjoy ourselves and it's a good release from the day to day stuff. It sounds like you've got more need than many of us to do this, so just enjoy that loud pedal. smile

My dad died when I was 11 and since then I've pretty much taken the view that life's too short and I'll do what I want, when I want. It could be viewed as being selfish but it kinda works for me. It's your life and what you fill it with is up to you. You can comfortably disregard anyone who tries to stop you.

If you want to bring intense pleasure through music why not have a lady perch on the corner of your amp and play a succession of low E notes? Suggest you start slowly and build the tempo gradually...

You're never too old to play the guitar!

I thought most blokes want kids as it’s a great excuse to have loads of Lego in the house.

Don't let any fker tell you you're meant to only do X because you're Y years old - fk them, they're generally the saddest people you'll ever meet and they won't everyone else to share their misery.

There's two things I subscribe to, one is you are only as old as you feel.
"Age" in the usual sense is more based on how someone acts, if you feel you are getting old, that's only because you've decided to throw the towel in and give up.
The other is that people are staying "younger" longer.
20 years ago, people put their games consoles in the attic once they hit 18.

Now, there's 60 year old COD players, dads are more likely to be eating cocopops at the breakfast table instead of glowering over the top of a newspaper.
