When I was stood in Tiananmen Square around 2008, I asked my guide where tank man happened. She panicked and said quietly but very firmly “Tank man did not exist! Stop taking about him.” Then even more quietly “They can hear you and will shoot you if you continue”.

It was very odd because Lilly had been fun and carefree until that moment. After we left the square she returned to being fun and we didn’t speak of it again.

I was in Tiananmen Square on May Day a couple decades ago. We were crammed in like sardines going across the bridge into the Forbidden City when some Falun Gong protestors started throwing leaflets and yelling. Despite the press of bodies, they were tackled and bundled off within seconds. Our guide whispered out of the side of her mouth: "you know who those people are, right"? I studiously avoided picking up one of the leaflets as a nice little souvrenir.

The problem is, in today's outraged society, you'd try to do that and some idiot would get angry at being told what to do.

I tried to help a chap in a 4x4 a couple of years back. He had an almost flat rear drivers tyre and clearly hadn't noticed given his speed. So I did the decent thing and started flashing him and indicating to pull over.

After he'd stopped, the meat-head ran out the car shouting WTF is your f***ing problem. He was crimson with rage.

I pointed out that he had a flat tyre and said I was trying to warn him as he had his kids in the car. He calmed down, but I didn't get a thank you or apology.

Only positive was I saw his wife tearing a strip off him as I drove off

So I can see why folks don't bother.
