Flash burns IIRC. The initial flash from the detonation causes paint and other thin layers on objects to instantly burn off, which followed by the blast wave makes it look like everything turns to dust and floats off. (Which it essentially does) That's my late-night educated recollection anyway.

I agree, the IR radiation travels quicker than the shockwave through air.

That's why you can see the dust being raised on the ground first I guess, the shockwave travels quicker through the earth.
