Dark chocolate for the 1st time...

Dark chocolate rocks - letting a piece just sit on your tongue and melt is one of life's rare pleasures. Even better followed up with a sip of a deep, rich red wine.

So odd how they quote the speed of the SR-71, a 60s plane!

It isn't really that odd. The SR-71 is still the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft ever built, so a pretty good reference point.

I thought the point of the image was to compare a conventional airliner (something most of us can experience) with the fastest aircraft capable of atmospheric flight and the fastest space probe (something that most of us cannot).

I think he's making a statement that it's odd that we have yet to better the SR-71's speed despite all the years technological advances.

Things usually advance due to necessity. There is obviously little need for such a plane these days what with the advances in satellite technology and UAVs.

The SR-71 (as a manned vehicle) may not be bettered for many years - not because we can't better it - but because we don't need to.

Agreed.

It's a bit like marvelling that no-ones made a faster steam locomotive than Mallard in the last 75 years.

Jesus what a pair of superior anorak's laugh . It's come to something when you can't remark on the amazing speed of a 50 year plane without some dullard telling you why you shouldn't.
