So that the means of support wasn't seen, the car was suspended fore and aft on wires through the front and back windows which were only just open with synchronised explosive bolts and bungie chords to pull the wires down out of sight. The problem was the explosive bolts proved harder to synchronise than anyone had thought and the car kept landing badly. On one occasion it bounced towards the actor so they had him stand further away. Eventually they got it right, the actor said his lines about the car being tough, got in and drove away as planned, leaving an unplanned trail of oil behind which was edited out afterwards. VW decided not to proceed with a similar ad for all their cars.
