Just for visuals methinks, there is no sensible engineering function in it to my eyes, particularly on the left hand side.

Nope, but it uses a similar piston to piston combustion cycle.
I have no idea what it is.

18 cylinder triangular formation opposed piston two stroke diesel nerd
the engines originally designed for minesweepers and then two power units put into locomotives of which there were 22 and a prototype.
also the animated gif is incorrect due to one bank which should be exhaust/inlet instead of the other way round

Close, your first vid is the one, PatOP Opposed Piston Engine. I thought it was an opposed piston type but the third co-axial larger piston was most novel, I'd not seen that before.
The 2nd is an OPOC which is summat different. Great comedy Heinz Wolff accent from the CEO!

Both fascinating, thanks /engineer smile

It would appear that it's a scavenging pump, used in much the same way that sump pressure is on a conventional 2-stroke engine. I suppose it needs to be larger than the other pistons so it can sweep as much volume as the pair of opposed pistons with their doubled effective stroke length.

I'm not sure how it's lubricated.

What was throwing me was the less than elegant arrangement on the left hand piston. It looked like it would require a very thin walled cylinder. The vid shows it is effectively without a cylinder head, not sure whether that is the fully assembled unit, if it is there would be a lubrication issue around that piston ring. Ultimately didn't look like it could support combustion but if its a pump rather than an engine it makes more sense.

Yes I was aware of the Deltic ! Interesting noise out of those things.
