If you watch the "smooth criminal" scene in Moonwalker - you can see the studs in the floor.

Look closely where their feet are at ~8:24. You can see the dancers deliberately slide their feet backwards a little to decouple from the stud (their left first) - and below each foot there is a bright dot on the floor which is presumably the top of the stud after it has retracted.

They are especially visible below the dancer to the far right of the screen where you get a glimpse of both studs and below Jackson himself where one is clearly visible.

You use more muscle power standing up from a seat than they would bringing themselves upright from a lean. Its just that they have to concentrate the force in a smaller muscle group.
