The PH Nightshift (Vol 2)
Discussion
Been quiet. Given up with viewing anything and settled with Spotify.
Just had to deal with some nonsense ticket:
'the network box' has 'some issue'... No IPadd, no MAC. No useful info about what 'some issue' might be. For an incident with a Telex. That we have had no involvement with, and don't support.
That's the level of detail I now expect from our Helpdesk. fking unreal.

Hi all,
I originally posted in the job section but would probably get a better response from here.
I have just been offered an internal IT operations role which is on a 12 hour shift pattern (7 till 7)
Looking at the rota it seems its 4 days on (2 days 2 nights) 5 days off and then 5 days on (2 days 3 nights) 4 days off.
It comes will a promotion and pay rise plus shift allowance which works out approx. 20k extra on top of my base salary. I am comfortable at the moment but the extra money could come in really handy.
Does anyone have any experience of working these type of shifts?
Are you constantly tired? Do you miss your home life?
Just to add I have 2 young kids (3 & 6) so 2 days a week I will be leaving before they wake and returning when they are in bed.
Although it will give me a chance to pick them up and drop them at school when I am off.
Any advice is much appreciated

Did similar, 4 on 4 off. I did it for nearly a little over 2 years. The only advice I can give is, try it.I originally posted in the job section but would probably get a better response from here.

I have no dependants, I loved the time off mid week as I could go places and they wouldn't be busy. Each period off was like a long weekend so you have time to get stuff done.
It wasn't helped by the job itself being soul destroying, boring, uninteresting and vastly unchallenging. I had lots of issues with sleep, not necessarily getting any but getting enough and getting good sleep was challenging. For a long, long time I had issues with crazy insomnia.
Forcing yourself to stay awake unnaturally on a night shift can be horrible and feel like torture.
However, I worked with numerous people who had done it for years, 10-12 years some of them. Which is why I say try it, for some people it just works.
In the end I left though as it was not doing me any good.

My shift pattern is similar, although I presume you'll get holidays which I don't.I originally posted in the job section but would probably get a better response from here.

We do 2d/2n, 2d/3n, 3d/2n, then a 32hr 'admin' week, then 10 days off. This is constantly repeated every six weeks.
This week I'm doing Mon/Tue days, Wed/Thu nights. Next week I'll start Wednesday Morning for the next block.
Last night I was leaving for work just as everyone was sitting down to my Sicilian father-in-law's homemade lasagne, that's probably the worst bit about shift work.
Tomorrow I'll sleep a good chunk of the day, get up for a few hours and then go back to bed again to 're-set'.
I didn't see the kids (similar ages to yours) Monday or Tuesday, but I took them to school on Wednesday (I get to do the yummy Mummy runs on my days off!) and did all my xmas shopping in an empty town centre, in general I see the kids a lot more than I would if I had to work 9-5, except 2 weekends out of every six.....there are pros & cons.
You need to have good support from your other half and extended family though as she's going to be on her own with the nippers a lot more, this includes bed times, illness, weekends, bank holidays....and they have to get used to you sleeping in the day.
Also you might over time be able to steer your company towards working from home, we've just embraced the concept and next week I'll be doing 60hrs from my armchair with the kids pestering me to watch YouTube...I'll be up to see in the New Year and get paid for it!
There are times when I hate doing shifts but the benefits still outweigh the negatives 17 years later.....
PS, As Grumpytwig said above, it just suits some people but not others, one of our guys developed severe depression and the nights really didn't help, maybe see if you can do a trial period?
Let me know if you have any other Qs....

I'd agree with most of the above, my big problem always seems to be normalising after a run of nights (although I'm currently on an easy two weeks days/two weeks nights ), my Friday is usually wasted on catching up with sleep and generally mooching around the house in a daze, on the plus side, I treat my Monday as effectively a day off - I only work 4 nights. Also, it's quite pleasant visiting the supermarket first thing when it's empty and freshly stocked!
And to keep in the spirit of the thread, I'm on my last shift of the year, just finished having a Tandoori sizzler and finishing early at 4am .

Just over an hour left of my last night shift for 2016. As others have said, you have to try it, you really can't tell how you'll get on just by looking at shift patterns.
Forcing yourself to stay awake is a struggle, well it is for me on the first night. By the second I'm alright. My trouble is trying to switch back from nights to normality. Not helped by the pattern I do. I find I really struggle to sleep the night before the first day shift, no idea what it is that causes it.
Time off during the week is ace though, can get loads done. Downside is now that I have recently had my first child, there are periods where I don't see him for a few days at a time when I'm on nights.
Been doing it for nearly 5 years now, shame it's such a boring job, motivation and interest is seriously lacking, but that's nothing to do with the shift work.

I used to work a 3 shift pattern, but only lasted 6mths as I hated nights, so dropped back onto 2 shifts. However, things started to go Pete Tong on nights, so came to an agreement with management and they let me do 'nafters', 6pm-3am, which is an awesome shift! Only do 4 nights that week, asleep for 3:30am, awake @ 9:30am, then have a full day at home until work again @ 6pm. Then on the Friday my weekend starts when I wake up Friday morning and I'm not back at work till 2pm Monday.
I'd do permanent nafters of they let me.
