Who is on the Page 2 Avoidance Team today?

The brink, I tell you. We were on the brink of Page 2.

The whole team is at lunch, I expect.

I just had a look at the PayPal thread where someone wanted to pay for a car by PayPal and the vendor, the one who posted on PH, was windy about it. One suggestion was a bank transfer instead and it reminded me of buying my current Audi. I did a bank transfer in the guy's front room. The moment it went through he said, "Oh, by the way, it uses a lot of oil." Nice. Thanks. I didn't have a go at him, buyer beware and all that, but I had accelerated quite hard in it on test and taken it to high revs and lifted off, watching the mirror in both cases. It looked fine. So, I put it into my bloke to look over and said about the previous owner's high oil usage warning. He rang to say it was so oily underneath they'd need to steam clean it. This they did and they couldn't find anything. No leaks, nothing. Couldn't explain it but he advised me to keep an eye on it. This I did and it seemed fine. At that time my commute was 110 miles a day so any problems would have shown up. When eventually it needed a drop I discovered how hard it is to get oil into a diesel A4. The oil wants to "glug" and go everywhere. So I was careful. It needed very little. So, what was the previous owner going on about? I reckon he just tried to fill it too fast and got oil everywhere; all down the side of the filler and all over the engine and gearbox. Every time. So the next time he looked it was as low as last time and then he poured more oil over the engine. Honestly, it goes for two thousand miles without needing any oil.

Weirdo.

The Passat was the same Dickie.
"She's been a bit oil thirsty lately" says the vendor.
Hmm, no, you've just pissed oil everywhere, absolutely everywhere because it's a swine to fill.

But that's dead now.

Well done, geordie. I should have enquired if it was a common complaint.

It's on 150,000 and going like a train. Smashing engine. Apparently, the 2 litre diesel that replaced it is problematical. I did well buying the 1.9.

It's so often the other way round for me and car buying decisions.

Tired of really old bangery old bangers for work, I went a bit up market and looked for a high spec A4 Avant with a low spec engine. What I was looking for was an S-line, quattro, 1.9 Tdi that didn't have trillions of miles. There were a few about but the one I chose was an '04 which had 118,000 and most of its history and seemed well cared for. It was up for a bit over £5,000 and I paid £5,000. In the fifteen months I've had it, I've done 32,000 miles, had regular servicing and a new cam belt which were necessary and new tyres, the wheels refurbished and some bodywork tidying up which weren't all that necessary. It's a lovely car. What can I say? It's tidy, it has leather and air con, sunroof and hot & cold folding doors. Not the last bit, I made that up. And it's a quattro, so it won't be caught out by bad weather. Apart from two punctures, one of which was my fault, it hasn't been any trouble at all.

And I enjoy driving it which I didn't the Mondeo it replaced. The Mondeo was very competent but was never going to win prizes in the Bonniest Baby Competition.

What's going on here? You seem to be under the impression that this is some sort of car forum.

Yes, I'm sorry, that's two days running.

Guard House? I'll come quietly, Sergeant.

In my defence, geordieracer did ask, Sarge. And you know how I am with damsels in distress.

Sorry. Normal service will be resumed shortly.

Bert the A.A man calls me his "gobby little damsel in distress" but very, very sarcastically. I buy him a pint every now and again.

Trivial... I'm pottering about in my folks garage; I have six cd head units in boxes, labelled and dated.

I'm going to take some laundry to the dry cleaners later this afternoon. In a real car forum far, far away (the inhabitants of which are a special bunch) they have a thread entitled "What have you done with your Aston today?". They were incredulous when I told them of my trip to Asda. I wonder what they'll make of a boot full of dirty shirts? biggrin
