Last Sunday at about 10:30am on a fairly empty M1 the variable limit was reduced to 20mph. The signs said 'Oncoming vehicle'. This took place on both carriageways.

Needless to say no 'oncoming vehicle' was ever seen.

Anyone have any idea what happened. I'm guess that some numpty hit the wrong button.

I've had that message passing Wigan on the M6 about 3 years ago. On that occasion I did see a car pointing the wrong way on the hard shoulder surrounded by police cars!

i guess they have to go on the information being given

About a year ago i came across a young lad contemplating jumping off a motorway bridge

for cars coming down the motorway it wasnt obvious that he was there as he was on the far side of the bridge

i was on the phone to the cops and they managed to get the matrix signs up to stop the traffic in a couple of minutes

I suppose that it could well have been something like that. That would at least explain why both carriageways were slowed.

It did carry on for a very long distance though - at least 30mins driving time - so 10 miles I guess.
