2-5" expected.
Checked the weather report again; now 4-8".

Which as it's coming down a bit now in Colorado, could be accurate.
You get loads of snow up there don't you?

The buses stopped running for a while in Halifax. Started snowing again in Huddersfield. Pretty big flakes , not sure when the next grit run by the council is but it probably be after the rush hour. Should make an interesting trip home for those in the valleys of Huddersfield.

Not this winter!

We had about 18" in total in December, but I was back in the UK when that happened (2 or 3 snowfalls worth).

Apart from that, maybe 6" in total that settled over several very half-hearted attempts.

I am disappoint.

The flakes are getting bigger and it is getting colder so it is settling now. They never grit my road so it is going to be interesting in the morning again

Living in Christchurch, Dorset the most exciting we've had so far is some moderate rain and one heavy frost before new year. I'm not holding out much hope either as it practically never snows down here.

Looks like the pattern remains, with any cooler weather coming from a Northerly or NWerly direction (polar martime) rather than from the NE or E.

This means snow remains more likely for elevated areas, occasionally at lower areas in the north/north west. Much rarer winds from the NE mean some snow possible for NE coastal areas.

The bad news is it means southern areas continue to miss out. As Mr GrimNasty points out, there's no cold pool on the continent anyway, so even if the winds switch it would require a long pattern change to benefit us.

Potential cold snap towards the end of the month being talked about by MetOffice, nothing permanent but could get chilly for a few days. As above, winds from the Arctic, so snow in the areas that have already benefited.
Out of curiosity (and before I give up on snow entirely for another winter), how long does there need to be a cold pool on the continent for it to positively benefit us in terms of snow? A few days or would it be weeks?

Report from Queensbury!

"Interesting" journey home down every back street and lane I could find to avoid the queues:

Very slippy going on many mainroads where the surface was mainly polished ice. Not good, especially when you are sat behind a fog light wker. rolleyes

Got home to find a decent covering of snow. This car and drive were pretty much clear when I left this morning:

Obligatory bench shot:

biggrin
Take care out there!

Good lord!! It's a tropical 4c down here in North Hampshire. If I remember correctly, we haven't seen snow here since February 2013.

Not really a 1+1=2 type answer. Once the continent is cold, and especially if there is snow on the ground, any winds that reach us from a NE/E/SE type wind will bring cold air. Cold air plus warm seas = lake effect snow.

The cold air then stays with us as long as the winds remain in that direction. Much better than the polar maritime type snow we have at the moment that just doesn't last and where temps fluctuate above 0.

Lots of talk of the continent cooling down as we go in to Feb. Of course, the problem now is the seas are still cooling down (bigger temp differentials for better lake effect snow tend to happen earlier in winter), and the sun is stronger.

When's the earliest date that we can officially blame Puggit for yet another year without any 'proper' snow fall in the Home Counties?

To be a bit fair to Puggit I think v8250 should share a small amount of blame, August really was a bit too early for this thread to start.

I think we as a group need to agree to not start next winter's thread until late September at the very earliest. You lot are all banned from using any kind of tyre that's suitable for winter, and I'll pay someone to break in to schmalex's place and seriously damage the Rayburn hehe

In my defence, I only ever started the thread when snow was due on Cairngorm hehe

V8250 is squarely to blame this year!
