I think Miss Sarcasm just summed it up pretty well. No matter how good the charts look, I won't believe it until I see it falling from the sky. That said I really really hope it does snow, Richmond Park looks great when it's all white.

Dammit - he's got us
Too far out to be able to pinpoint that sort of thing. In the chart I posted tonight though, you can see low pressure NE of the UK, with winds coming from the North as low pressure has anti-clockwise winds in the northern hemisphere - so that would create a high probability of precipitation.
Schmalex gave away another clue - when you see patterns of kinks in the isobars, almost like a fold, that's a shortwave which could create a precipitation baring front.
So, we know it will be windy, and we know the winds are coming from the North. The further south you are, the more marginal the chances of snow. Height, as always, counts too.
Thanks for the reply. I have a Jazz on winter tyres and that snow prediction map for Wednesday makes it more likely choice for transport at the end of the week. Than an lwb barge on XL rated summers. While we are expecting a cold snap, with marginal snow threat, next week - the North Americans are staring down the barrel of this:
These are the temperatures up high, where snow is formed. -40 is exceptional and guarantees it will snow (if precipitation is around!).
The UK will be looking at temps of -4 to -8, which is marginal. Beyond -8 and it's pretty much snow time.

Some tweets from Ian Fergusson at MetOffice:
WEDS PM-FRI AM: Cold, windy. Through this period, any snow falling to all levels away frm coast
NEXT WEEKEND: Turning markedly cold again
...pronounced change in weather will be evident everywhere. By Thurs, most showers falling across the UK will be of snow

No you're not
Hmm, so how bad do we think this is going to be then? We're only planning on going to Valberg/Isola, that kind of area, and the forecasts I've been looking at for the past week are only predicting fairly light snow. I'll probably pick up some chains this week if there's going to be a decent amount of snow, but as we're staying in town surely I won't need much more than that? I've been there in the winter before in various different cars and the main roads have all been fine.Puggit said:
We fly Friday morning and pick up a hire car with winters and chains at Geneva. The storm has come forward by 48 hours since it was first noticed and total accumulations have reduced somewhat. Fingers crossed, it clears through Weds, Thu and Friday morning. The French authorities are well used to dealing with clearing lots of snow on the roads quickly, so I'm not overly concerned. As long as we can get to the town, it can snow as much as it wants - I'm in no rush to come home on Monday!!
I reckon we'll see average accumulations of 50 - 75cm over the 3 days. Locally, possibly more.
The problems at Christmas were more due to the wind and holiday makers in cars with summer tyres getting stuck
