Brilliant. Thanks for that. I'm going to bring the Saab and it is on winter tyres. Going to head up through Denmark and see what happens. Lights would be a bonus, but just fancy going for a bit of a potter and seeing where we end up. smile
Sounds a good trip. Due to the late winter it seems quite a few of the best roads are still open (they have "no messages" on the traffic messages). Some of the best are those below. I didn't do them on my latest trip due to work reasons though, so not completely sure of the conditions:

Lysebotn near Stavanger:

Trollstigen (north of Bergen)

Sognefjellet is amazing too, but it says it's closed overnight. They can get a bit of snow there, biggrin:

You can use this webcam map to get an idea of the conditions for places you're wanting to go:

Something tells me that you won't see anything like this around Scarborough coming off the North Sea. Some of the Lake Effect Snow shots coming out of Buffalo look incredible.

Looks like "The Day After Tomorrow"

We can counter with some truly incessant drizzle and astoundingly mild temperatures.

I think its going to be Business as usual for us this winter, not that I want quite as much Snow as Buffalo got.

This time last year the conveyor belt of storms had already started up off the Atlantic. We now have a blocking high over Scandinavia preventing this.

Very different setups, and a reason to be hopeful.

I was thinking about that, if that blocking goes then it will be the same as last year if the situation in the US continues?

Yep. It could even be worse than last last year if the Bartlett High (the normal high pressure that sits over Southern Europe) gains some traction and heads a little further north - that would bring 8c and drizzle to us for months on end...

Mind you, things are currently looking a little better than last year, so there is reason to be hopeful.

Although you say that, I can't remember exactly, mid 1990s, there was a massive very localised 'lake effect' snowfall off the English Channel one morning just between Worthing and Brighton and about a mile inland.

7 feet of snow! Crazy in such a short time, that isn't the kind of weather event we want at all, just a nice average 6" will do nicely (Fnarrr, Fnarrr...)

Pffft, one sharp left handed and that snow issue is gone. wink

I would happily settle for 1/4 of that amount of snow. Just something to play in and enjoy for a but instead of this crap.

I can imagine my sense of humour failing pretty much as soon as I start trying to dig/swim to the garage to fetch my skis. hehe

I'd like to think it'd be good fun, as long as the lights / gas stayed on! I think i'd spend my day reading the daily mail comments section for good old laughs..

It's pretty stupid to drive with that on the car. Goodbye front view when you brake.

I love their optimism, biggrin "Here, lets clear the driveway so we can get the car out..."

I'd be very happy with that amount of snow, as long as I wasn't stuck at work and had enough food/ still some electricity. Would make for a good story, and since my skis are inside there would be no problem sticking the skins on them and hopping off the balcony to go for a walk. Main problem could be when it all melts!

A friend of mine has a vineyard in Lockport, just 15-20 miles North of Buffalo), he has had just a slight dusting of snow so far!
