I'm going to stick with it to be honest. Everyone got super excited because of the potential of snow on Christmas Day, but to be honest, it was a little pie in the sky. However, the charts are, and have been for a while, pointing to a chilly period around the Christmas / New Year time, so I'm kind of working on trends. Couple this colder air with some developing low pressures coming from the North (a very strange direction) and, what is looking like some developing shortwaves (kinks in the low pressure), there really is all to play for in my opinion. We may just end up at 3c and hammering rain, but, equally, we could well end up at -2 and some very intense snowy interludes

Pesky front finally cleared late morning today, taking with it its drizzle and low cloud which has stuck around for what seems like forever. Slight drop in temperature but good to see glimpses of the sun. Next few days look ok - dry with temps around seasonal norm. We (Channel Islands) certainly won't be getting any snow next week, in fact it's looking rather settled (further south the better I think, or worse depending on how you look at it!)

It does seem weird that we are actively wishing for cold, when really cold weather is actively avoided by most people, I wonder why it is we crave cold and snow ?

To avoid it being mild, wet and windy ?

Childhood memories of it being fun ?

It always smells nice when its cold ?

Snow looks pretty (for a short time) and covers stuff up we dont want to look at.

A distraction, a difference to the norm ?

We like a bit of mild adversity ?

Excuse to drink booze and crank the heat up ?

Makes us feel all cosy when in the house when all nice and warm ?
4 wheel drifts and cheeky use of handbrake for manoeuvring purposes!

Well, saw the sun for the first time in around a month today, which was very nice! And snow chances have increased since I ended up only taking ski clothes. However we do need to get to the broken landrover/ aga category warning before we can really get certain about things. How is the forecast going on those fronts?

That is truly pathetic.

I really don't know why we bother with weather forecasts at all.

Does anybody, other than perhaps fishermen really listen to them and seriously change anything based on what they say.

In winter it's chilly, wear a coat.

it rains, carry an umbrella.

In summer it gets warm, don't wear a coat.

Honestly the fuss and bother in what is an incredibly benign climate here is amazing.

Still, keeps a lot in jobs and gives us something pointless to talk about.
Oil rigs need to know them if they might have problems with helicopters/ they will need to disconnect due to the waves being too high. Powerplants probably need to know to prepare for ramp up in energy demands due to more heating etc etc.

Looks like we're back on board for some fun weather *after* Christmas. White Christmas isn't quite written off, but remains unlikely.

It's still 8 days out, so unreliable but *IF* the storm on the 27th comes true then it will be something that is talked about for a very long time.

I'm supposed to fly on the 28th... could be interesting! Thank goodness it's Aberdeen and not one of the London airports if it turns out like that!

Forgot about that, it is indeed wonderous, like the time in probably about 2001 where I had an old Pug 309 "Look" as a daily and there was about 4 inches of fresh snow, the wife dispatched me to go and get something and I took a detour past the leisure centre car park which was empty, I had a happy half hour until a Police car came in and put the blues on, I drove over and wound my window down and the copper said "You, ps off", which I did biggrin found another car park and had some more fun and went home.

Pug was good, but the Metro 1.0 "Clubman" was the best snow car, skinny tyres for traction, dont care if I broke it, good visibility, short wheelbase for a quick spin and an epic.

handbrake.

Winter 1981, there was some good snowfall and learnt to drive in a friends VW Beetle. Lost count the number of times we got the the stuck in the rural snow covered lanes of West Berkshire. Some days we were out for 5+ hours practicing using the handbrake, desperately trying to master over steer, thinking/wishing ourselves to be Eric Carlsson or Stig Blomqvist and wondering what the hell is a 'Scandinavian Flick'. Spent more hours digging the car out than driving and learnt the valuable lesson why carry two coconut doormats in the car when it's snowing. How the little Beetle put up with this thrashing I'll never know. But, by Jove, we had the very, very best of fun smile

I'll be up in Irvine on the west coast of Scotland from the 22nd to the 26th, then down to Penzance from the 27th to 3rd. What are my chances of seeing any white stuff?

I am obviously massively sceptical and will remain so even if you tell me I will see some snow...!
