Well Boys and Girls, I thought it's about time to kick this off. Last year's thread started 27.08.13 so we're even ahead of schedule.

What's sparked this off in my mind is that I'm picking up a new set of winter wheels for the FXT and have been researching winter tyres...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Nokian's are looking good at the moment.

So, Puggit, Schmalex and all the other time tested PH forecasters...what do you think; snow or no snow?

Marking this even though I was dreadfully disappointed by last winter's lack of snow.

Well the thread isn't normally opened until a fall of snow (yes, on the Cairngorms normally) is forecast smile

Tricky one - but the portents are better than normal for a cold one. We've had a couple of instances where if the weather had lined up in a similar way during winter then this thread would be going bonkers. Schmalex is more of your long term pattern reader though.

However, as summer is due to return next week I'm not sure what I'm doing in here tongue out

Last year was truly exceptional though - Rossendale commuting to Leeds. I did not see zero or below. Weird. That'll be the £700 on winter tyres frown

It was definitely strange. It wasn't cold but the amount of snow dumped in the mountains was crazy. Some of the best boarding and back country skiing conditions up here in generations. But, nothing lower down the country and once you got lower the snow line was as crisp and dramatic as I've ever seen it. Hopefully this year will bring colder temps and a more sustained spell of them, I want to get some decent ice climbing in again because last year sucked! Oh, and I've got a nice fresh set of PA4's in the garage ready to go on...but I don't foresee that being for a while.

What are the Met Office saying this winter will be like? If they say something like, "unseasonably warm", I may have to invest in a new snow shovel.

Jupp, we in arctic Norway had one of the hottest summers ever, including the warmest day on record where I live (and lots of other places). However as you said those same conditions would have brought a lot of very cold days in Norway, resulting in cold far enough south for the UK to get snow.

My prediction this year is quite a lot of snow in the UK. However it might be more of the January/ February time for it. The first snow high up in the mountains here was around the 16th of July and there hasn't been any yet. So it's a bit late, wink

Can you lot shut it for a few months? our log burner is still in the stable, our rayburn isn't fitted & we're still rendering before we can do the plumbing. Oh & we've got ceilings to fit, currently we look up & see roofing felt. No cold weather for a few months please smile

Apparantly there are still around 300 patches of snow in the Highlands.

My car bonged at me yesterday morning - yep 3 Celsius in August.

Autumn seems to have arrived early in the North East. The trees are losing leaves and the leaves on the trees are turning colour already. Never known it so early. Also migrating swans and geese heading south have been spotted. Early for those guys too!

Not reading anything into it, just observing that it's happening earlier in the year than I can remember.

To keep Puggit happy, and to kick this thread back into life, it's still snowing here, though beginning to clear a bit.

I got winter tyres (£20 each part worn) fitted to my car last year, and not one drop of snow. I got normal tyres fitted this year, and will work from home/attempt to get in, fail, turn around and have some fun on the way back then log on.

So long as we don't get the winds and storms of last Winter, I'll put up with all the snow in the world. I fking hated last Winter, even though I didn't get it half as bad as most other places...

I didn't even know this one was here!!!

My long range prediction for the UK is wetter and warmer than average frown

Although, it's a very long way away, so I'm only about 10% confident

Calgary has had the first snow of the 'winter', nice wet 4" dollop with all the leaves still on the trees, so a bit messy!
