The number of kisses is a code showing at which level within their affections you currently stand. You're meant to know this in order to put the correct number of kisses on the reply, else you get less kisses next time.

I'd managed to train mine out of using kisses at the end of texts - now she's using those emojis constantly. If a message ends with an actual punctuation mark I'm generally in trouble!
