Oh agree

Never heard side lights referred to as parking lights. When did this happen?
They've been called that for years. Check the highway code, specifically rules on parking facing oncoming traffic at night, to see them referred to as such.

My cars don't have parking lights. They have sidelights.

Some cars do have parking lights (mostly German in my experience) that when you park facing the wrong way on the side of a road, you can extract the key from the ignition barrel in a 4th position with the indicator on and it'll bring just the nearside, or the offside sidelights on.

That's a German car, I'm more impressed that it has a full compliment of pixels.

I would be surprised, unless your car is something very old or unusual. On some cars they are activated by simply leaving the indicator stalk in an on position when removing the key. As their use is required by the highway code in certain conditions then it would be hard to comply without them.

Should be fine - they seem to be getting an awful lot of miles per gallon (considering they're not doing any miles...)

Not been aware of this feature on any of my following cars. I'm willing to be proved wrong, but for vehicles without parking lights, sidelights are sufficient. Not many people park on roads that have a speed limit above 40mph.

Vauxhall Nova '89
Proton Aeroback '91
Honda CRX '89
Honda CRX '91
Triumph Vitesse '71
Renault Clio '06
Honda Jazz '04
Honda Civic '02

Let alone all of the other cars I've driven. As I said, it's mostly the German cars that still have this feature.

Edit: This is, that I have sidelights on all of these cars that can be left on. As opposed to the ones which can illuminate just one side, as you say, with an indicator.

Not to encourage this level of tedium, but on my car, you push a button on the key barrel and turn the key backwards past Off (to 'PARK' in fact). This turns the sidelights on.

You can't otherwise leave any lights on with the key out.

Thus, they are sidelights, and they are also parking lights.

My 1985 Fiat Uno had this feature.

Some cars it's just that you can leave the sidelights on with the key out, the German stuff, and some others (possibly my old Cavalier, but I might be wrong there) turn one side or the other on depending how the indicator stalk is positioned.

All cars have the facility to leave lights on when parked. Thus, in many cases it seems that sidelights then become 'parking' lights. Same thing really.

Back to the thread, hopefully. smile
