Was in Bradford last week, buying a car. Met some very pleasant locals. No worse really than any other Northern sthole. See Oldham or Middleton for instance.

I am presently re-reading Bill Bryson's "Notes from a small island" and this is his opinion of Bradford (probably written in the 1980s)-

Bradford's role in life is to make every place else in the world look better in comparison, and it does this very well.

I'd argue that it has a disproportionate number of dodgy areas (though I live in one of the nicer bits)

Bradford provides disproportionate amount of content for the like of Police Interceptors type programmes, for good reason.

All cities are the same?
No. But they all have decent parts and stty parts.

Grumps.

So it’s a mystery to you as to why Bradford has a thread dedicated to how stty it is?

And you’ve been to Bradford?

I have a feeling they’re there now.

I have. At one point I was visiting weekly. Whilst it has its share of scum I wouldnt necessarily rate it as any worse than certain areas of Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, London.

The driving behaviour does seem quite cock-ish but I guess if you ever challenged them they would say they were "making progress" hehe

Just seen this,

I strongly suspect it is because Ilkley is classed as part of Bradford, the area comes under Bradford Council but for reasons to do with Ilkley residents petitioning it has a Leeds postcode.

Ilkley has seen a massive boom in property demand since Covid and as someone who is fairly local I know it's largely due to people moving north from London partly due to remote working and partly due to some large corporations moving to Leeds, it's an acute problem that long term residents of Ilkley are getting priced out of the market when they want to move due to the influx of new buyers with cash to burn.

Indeed. Also to get to Ilkley (and Ben Rhydding/Burley/Menston - all popular) you have to go through Guiseley which is a Leeds postcode AND a Leeds council tax...

The local property market is bonkers. Many have seen a 2x rise since 2012. I've seen 2 bed dormer bungalows go for >650k, not even in Ilkley...

How is "limited previous convictions" not just "previous convictions"?

The sad thing is the same behaviour will have been happening every single day and night since this happened, it's only dealt with when those involved are immobilised by a serious accident, had it been less so the driver and passenger would have just disappeared and nothing would have come of it.

See these kind of idiots on Instagram, usually in some kind of German "whip" and the MO seems to be just accelerate and keep accelerating, weave between other traffic and it will all sort itself out by and large.

Then you get comments off wannabe German Whip drivers saying "Mans got mad skillz", er, no, not really man has got a low regard for other road users, a skewed perception of danger, a desperate need for affirmation and the ability to push an accelerator and aim a car that does pretty much everything for you.

Its "Mad Skillz" until you hit an articulated lorry at a junction at 50 mph, hard enough to jackknife it.

Trouble is, sometimes a racial element creeps in, at one end of the scale its those who look to discredit a whole race by citing a few idiots as examples to justify their prejudice, then at the other end of the scale there is the nothing to see here types who dont want to say anything in case they get seen as one of the first group by the witch hunters looking to out anyone who says anything that isnt 100 percent positive, even if its for sound reasons like road safety. There are a few of those on here. I should imagine a lot of folk in Bradford are getting mightily pissed off with low flying Golf R's, M140i's and the like when trying to go about their daily business.

There is definitely an issue though, with young men, in urban areas, driving very badly in high performance cars, and Passats.

Ha ha - Passats - with black wheels.

There is a cultural issue regarding young Asian lads and driving. It is a combination of not drinking (allegedly), living at home with mum and the car being the way to peacock your way out of a stty house, in a stty part of town, to girls you can't bring home or take to the pub.

It is exacerbated by the fact that the centre of Bradford has very little white population. They've migrated outwards. So you get to play with the Asian chavs in the city centre, but head to Buttershaw, Thorpe Edge, Brierley, Canterbury Ave or Holmewood and you get the traditional white chav, driving like a throbber, doing much the same for the same reasons.

The Asian community don’t tend to live on Thorpe edge, buttershaw, holmewood. They still seem to hold out as defiantly white areas. Holmewood, basically of yr not from there: you wouldn’t be moving there !!!

Having been to virtually all of the Uk , I’d say most cities are similar or if not far worse. Bradford is an amazingly rural place with many beautiful places to live. Problem is the dirt poor parts are literally the city centre and the few mile’s surrounding it. So that’s what any visitors see.

I do think it’s quite a divided city though. One problem upcoming is the increase in Albanians and the sheer poverty they bring.
