Read the FAQS / 101 guides before posting. Your question - like here on General Gassing - has probably been answered 1 million and one times. Take time to read through the various guides, links, etc to build up a basic working knowledge of building a basic wardrobe - whether work or business casual etc. Be advised that there is a lot of very serious discussion on these forums because a fair number of posters have a sartorial passion and the discussions can be quite esoteric.
There are a number of good tumblrs to do with sartorial wear (classic menswear or casual - never fashion).

Thanks again all.....done loads of reading and am still none the wiser really. Will persevere and read some more to try to make up for my obvious lack of natural style!
I'm actually in a similar position but frankly given up worrying about things and decided to just wear what I feel comfortable in providing there are no issues in terms of dress codes to get to certain venues. I mean, I like the idea of blazer/chinos/shirt/shoes but despite millions of 40-something blokes looking perfectly acceptable in that style, I'd feel a tt wearing it. I did try some stuff in some shop a while ago and felt like an idiot in the changing rooms so bought yet another casual t-shirt and left. Edit: if there are issues, I just wear smart trousers/shoes/shirt or smart trousers/shoes/polo shirt (collars down!). Nothing fancy, doesn't draw attention.

I quite like Uncrate.
For fashion is does a "look" with co-ordinating clothes, shoes, etc.
It also does other stuff like new car release photos etc.
http://uncrate.com/style/ is the fashion section.
