or at the very least I will not tip him this time
Wait, what now?!?

He gave you a haircut that was so bad that you nearly walked out in tears AND YOU GAVE HIM A TIP!!
I've witnessed someone tip at an all you can eat Chinese buffet.

Not that we should be tipping table service in this country anyway...

There's a definite difference between a salon and a barber shop...the main one being salons are st!
It depends on each salon and barbers. I lived in Fairford Leys, Aylesbury and the ladies at Destiny were very, very delightful. It was £19 for a full head wk experience, often even the work experience girl would rub your arms and hands down. As a mechanic it was a much required pampering service, an essential if you like.

Salons are better for me for the below reasons;

- Non rushed service (no queue of doll scroungers with skin heads waiting behind you)
- Full head, neck and shoulder massage by an attractive lady
- No-one asks me if I watched 'the game' or any other type of hooligans sport
- Radio 1, or even worse, Kiss FM is never played (unless you attend a poverty spec salon on a council estate)
- Text based reminder service a day before your appointment is due

My current salon is bolted on the side of a barbers and I pay £14 for the salon cut which lasts 45 minutes, as opposed to the barbers cut that is £11 that lasts about 15 minutes. It's not as good as Destiny, but as soon as I am employed again I shall return there without a doubt.

If they were golf courses, barbers would be pitch and putt and salons would be the invitation only courses with complimentary spa facilities on site.

I have used the same barber for the last 6 years. He does a bloody good job and is a friendly chap too! He has moved to 3 different barber shops in the local area and I have followed him to each one. He now owns his own barber shop of which I am a regular customer. In the whole 6 years whenever I have walked into the barbershop that he is working in I have always declined the other barbers offers and stated that, "I will wait for Mo thanks". Funnily enough the other barbers have never burst into tears or shown any real emotion to my statement. They usually just say "ok" and invite the next person over.

It's quite simple OP. Next time you walk in and he offers you his seat, quite clearly say "no thanks, I'm waiting for him", and point at the barber you want to cut your hair. Job jobbed!

Erm... you do realise that there aren't any laws against young women working in Gentlemen's Barbers don't you?
Just to confuse matters further, the girl who cuts my hair is advertised as the barber in what is basically a ladies hair/tan/nails/etc place. She just does men's hair. She used to cut my hair in a more traditional sort of barbers, when she moved jobs to somewhere nearer where I live she took my custom with her.

I was disappointed to find my local barbers shop closed down - £5, number five cut. Then I found they'd opened up in another nearby town, so I go there instead. In and out in five minutes flat, though I always end up paying for an hours parking in case there's a queue when I get there.

I once made the mistake of visiting another barber in the same town and getting a trim and thin without asking the price first. £16. Tonsorial Artistes, apparently, is some kind of code for "very expensive haircuts here".

Perhaps ask your mother to tell the barber what she wants?

You're doing it wrong. I go and see the very lovely Anne who is a pretty, chatty 20-something and has no qualms about rubbing my head with her long slender fingers. She'll then spend an age carefully attending to my mop somehow sculpting it into a semblance of presentability. All this while occasionally squishing her cleavage into my ear and the nape of my neck.
Barbers? Pah.
Amen. Even at £24 it's worth it. Would I like a head massage while you wash my head through? Yes I would. One of my favourite hungover pastimes.

I know your pain. I have a friend who has a friend who owns a unisex hair place. To help her out I dedcided to ditch my barber and use her place instead. The first few cuts were exactly what I wanted, from 3 different people too. She's pretty cheap with her prices so it win all round for me. Then I got one of the girls I'd not used before. She made a right dogs dinner of it.

The next time I went in, I was going on holiday and left it late. She was the only option. OK, maybe I didn't explain what I wanted very well the last time I thought. I was very clear and specific with her and she did it again. Chopped off my sideburns too, aaarrghhh. I said it wasn't what I wanted but didn't make a meal of it. Whenever I go in now, I always fake a phone call and let someone else go before me if she's on!

Why do some people find it so difficult to just tell them straight that they would prefer to wait for a different person?

To not hurt the girls feelings. If she was rude or nasty then I'd tell her straight but the fact is she's just not very good at her job. I'd not want to hear someone come into my office and go "oh, it's you, I'll just wait until someone else comes in to answer my query."

Who the hell uses a barber these days? For beards of epic proportions I can understand, but for having a decent chop on the barnet a hairdresser.

Saying that. I've never paid for a haircut in my life. And I hate having my hair cut too.

But surely if you were crap at your job you would want to hear that so that you can be aware of it and improve!

With regard to the barbers, you can simply say you are waiting for x - that won't hurt her feelings. Everyone has a preferred cutter, no one working in the barbers will care.

This.

The fake phone call is a good idea!

I always thought every one made an appointment for hair do.
My wife and son, phone for an appointment, with specific hair cutting technicians, these technicians, apparently have client lists, the better / popular the technician, the bigger the client list, the more valuable to the actual salon / barber.
I on the other hand, paid 5 quid for a set of electric shearers, at a market, ten years ago.
I strip off, sit on a chair in the back garden, and my wife gives me an all over with a number 2 once a month.
Jobs a good un.

eekbiggrin

I can smell it. I trained my senses when I was single and on the prowl. There's limited time on a night out to catch prey so you have to weed out the unsuitable ones.

I've started going to a proper gentlemen's barber here in Munich. Absolutely fantastic place and they even provide the customers with scotch. A wet shave and haircut is about €70 which doesn't seem too bad.
