Thank you all for the amazing and heartwarming (sometimes tragic) posts. What a difference a day makes.

Been home a bit. Baby out of incubator. Antibiotics stopped as infection gone. Jaundice level dropped so no uv treatment either. I got to hold her, change her nappy and feed her this evening. Had some professional help as never done it before. smile. Still early days, but hopefully she is getting better. I suppose being a big baby can help.

Mother has had a day of no headache. Had a bad night, but today has been much better. She has been up and about, showered and has been moved on to maternity ward. Still waiting for MRI scan results, but hopefully she is on the mend and the headaches are subsiding. As with baby, we'll see.

Will get pic on here when I can get a decent one of her. She is in a cot now so will get chance tomorrow.

Thanks again to everyone who has posted on here. I hope you and all of your families are ok.

I just hope we are on the mend now and baby doesn't rebound with her treatment. I'm also hoping that mother's headaches are going and it isn't just a pain relief mask.
The difference a day makes, indeed! Congrats to you all. Remember to keep looking after yourself - they've both got the care they need - and don't forget to ask for help if you need it. I don't just mean on here, though there are some people with terrific experience of going through exactly the same as you, but also proper, professional help. As men, we're feckin brilliant at glossing it over and sometimes that's not the best way.

In any case, sounds like all is getting better.

Fantastic news! I have been thinking of your little family all day and I'm so happy things are looking up 24 hours later!

Look forward to seeing the pics when you can, and glad you got to be hands on with your daughter today. I'm going to toast you and your family now with a vodka! Please keep us updated and all the best!

Now. Get some kip in the bank, you're going to need it!
Absolutely this!

Glad there seems to be a bit of blue sky appearing for you, OP. It makes you feel pretty useless when things like this happen.

Congrats!

A word of caution. Mrs Puggit was unable to attend to our first born, also down to medical issues (not even able to feed our son). This left me responsible for the first couple of weeks and obviously this means that by the time she was fit again I was very much in charge of the little one.

Try and include your other half as much as possible in planning the days, changing nappies, feeding etc. Mrs Puggit suffered a degree of PND as a result of all of this.

Sorry to read your initial tale, glad its all going better now though smile

We lost our daughter at Xmas, born at 22weeks and too small to survive, bless her. It makes a bit of you die inside, and its a piece you can never recover, even though for the most part you do heal.

We are now pregnant again, 29 weeks and 4 days! Poor wife has had the pregnancy from Hell; hyper sickness, placental abruptions, incompetent cervix, went back in to labour again at 22 wks, but caught in time and stopped with medication and surgery. eek

She is just emerging from 7 weeks of complete bed rest and we are able to do small things like go down the stairs, or make a cup of tea hehe

Pregnancy / kids / giving birth - what a roller coaster. All worth it if the results a good one though.

Chin up and best of luck, itll be 'rite smile
Not much fun!

Good luck, hope she goes full term, but after 27 weeks prospects are very good

Splendid news on the update, hopefully everyone will be home soon.

Monkey face was very unexpectedly early and spent two weeks in SCBU. Feeding your kid through a tube is absolutely no fun. Sleeping on the ward is also about as much fun as you'd expect.

He's bigger now.

You'll be home in a couple of weeks. It'll feel like a couple of months I'm afraid.

(Echo'ing the above, keep your wife as engaged as possible. She probably feels a bit useless right now).

Apologies for a late response to the OP but my twins knocked on the door 14 weeks early many years ago early which resulted in one baby not surviving birth, and the other in an incubator weighing one pound, 16 ounces.
Daughter in incubator on oxygen and a lot of tubes (squeezed my finger real hard when I first saw her there) but doing well until we got a call that one of her lungs had collapsed.....she pulled through this at 29 weeks gestation. We thought we had lost her.
Anyhow........she came out of hospital at full gestation, on oxygen, is now a grown up 23 year pain in the a@se with more ballet qualifications i have ever seen....a towering 1.80mtrs. and stunning (no pics).
Oh, about to start her MBA in dance movement therapy.

So, what was the darkest period of my life has turned out beautiful........

Good luck OP!

Thanks for the responses again all. Sorry to hear of the tragedies that some of you have endured.

There has been more progress today. Baby is off all tubes and is being bottle fed. Mother is now in transient care in a bed next to baby's cot. Mother's head still sore when leaning forward, but all scans have shown no issues. Still early days, so will see how it goes.

I've finally had some new daddy nerves today. Been wondering how you can do things and not keep watching baby. Been wondering how you can sleep and not need to keep an eye on her. I've been worrying about every funny noise she has made, was worried when she was sick and choked earlier and was worried about mother as her blood sugar been low today.

To put it mildly, I'm a bag of nerves. This is what has turned our lives around in the last five or so days:

Off for some sleep now. Cheerio all.

Great update, fantastic to read all is getting better. Just reading this parked up overlooking the harbour with the little one asleep in the back - was the only way to get him to drop off today, but a great excuse to go for a drive, just the two of us - part of the fun!!

One of the times where I love the internet, we're in Australia and Moldova and we're both happy about a positive story happening in the UK :-)

What a beautiful baby. Congratulations. And do get some sleep now!

Just a word of warning my eldest was in scbu for a month and we had 24 hours notice of him coming home! At that point I did even own a single nappy - we'd bought nothing!

All perfectly normal. You're clueless right now and that's unnerving, it will however keep you on your toes and that's again a natural part of being a new parent. I like to think the lack of knowledge we all have at the outset keeps you sharp and listening to every noise or cough is all part of why we humans are so successful at rearing our young.

That said, these first few weeks will fly by and you'll be casually burping her whilst juggling bottles and bibs in no time. Take a step back, enjoy this initial 'getting to know you' phase with your other half as it's a one off. There's nothing quite like your first.

This! I received a phone call at work from my wife saying our son could come home. Took an extended lunch break, went home, collected the baby seat, went to the supermarket to buy nappies (bought the wrong size (didnt know there was a size 0!) and then went to the hospital. We were told there was a chance he could come home at the weekend, wasnt expecting Tuesday lunchtime!

Brought our son home, then left my wife in a semi-dazed state as I had to go back to work! Luckily I only had to work the afternoon then could start Paternity leave.

Just wait until you have apremature baby arrived at home from hospital. She is tiny and Tesco substitute your prem baby nappies with maxi plus size!

Nappy was bigger than the baby

Leaving the hospital and leaving my wife and daughter after emergency c-section was a bewildering experience.

Driving home with us all in the car was more daunting - I remember it like it was yesterday.
