Basically, my 30th birthday is coming up and to be honest, while I love celebrating my partners birthday and getting nice gifts for my family and friends, personally I absolutely LOATHE the idea of being the centre of attention as well as feeling like I have to organise all my friends into one location to commemorate an event that to me, means no more than the day that preceded it.

I can't decide if I should slap myself on the face and stop being a miserable git or if I'm allowed to mark the day in a way I choose fitting...having a rarely permitted curry, kicking my feet up with a beer and watch something like Blackhawk down on extra loud with the surroundsound on.

Do you actually look forward to your 6 pack of black socks and a bottle of aftershave day?

I had a Top Gear "experience" voucher for my birthday last week. Nice. smile

I've forgotten my own birthday before - only realised at around 3pm in the afternoon when my mum called to wish me many happy returns.

The wife loves birthdays as they're a big thing in her family so I can't escape my own now.

That said, and it's a great rule, we don't buy each other presents for each other - we book away a long weekend somewhere we've never been before. So we get a couple of nice breaks away in June (mine) and October (hers).

23 tomorrow - pub lunch and a few days off work is alright by me.
Gifts are a bonus, but the best thing for me is having a reason for people you like to come together, relax, be happy and just have a time out. Same applies to Christmas really. hippy

Surely it's one day a year when it's all about you?
Just do what you want to do!

With mine being on Sept 11th it has (since 2001) always felt a bit wrong to celebrate it. Not least because absolutely every media outlet and everywhere you look is filled with pictures commemorating the event.

The thing I hate is being bought things I don't need (or even want) by my wife and kids and then the cost appears on our next credit card statement so I'm paying for it myself anyway.

No, I don't bother with mine or with Christmas these days. Not that anyone other than my daughter would be mindful to remember anyway.

I share my birthday with North Korea, but I can live with it

Same as my missus, 11th of Sep and she's a twin too.

A nice sentiment, not so sure it actually works out like that too often for most.

In theory, yes. In practise, hah!

I can and can't. It's more annoying that people want to make a fuss. The missus wanted to organise a surprise party one year. Thank fk she didn't. Apparently a cafe meal and chocolate cake isn't a good birthday.

I don't mind people doing anything for my birthday but I'm not bothered either way.

Last year I was with my father all day and neither of us noticed it was my birthday until my sister called to wish me happy birthday.

Is it apparently spontaneous but clearly scripted and takes place over a week instead of the 24hrs it's made to look like?
wink

You sound exactly like I do. No one else seems to understand, and I'm often lambasted for it. If it's my birthday, I'll do as I please more so than I usually do.

Got up really early, drove 120 miles to coast and waited to see the sun rise. Crab sandwich for breakfast and a beer for lunch.
Home for steak and chips and a bottle of wine.
Feel good about surviving another year.
You deserve it all.

Stay cool.
