There have been quite a few studies showing that taking regular breaks increases the amount of work done in between the breaks, and that smokers tend to be more efficient workers because of this.
That sounds like something Benson and Hedges commissioned. Utter tosh if you ask me.

Usually pooh-pooh'd by those this thread is complaining about who think working ridiculous hours is more important than getting the work done. the pint is you can't maintain concentration for long periods of time. Taking the occasional break means you go back to the job with a decent level of concentration rather than just getting worse and worse throughout the day. Plus there's the issue of eye strain for those working in front of computers, back issues in office chairs, and general health issues of sitting still all day.

Surely its about what is achieved during "normal" working hours

I have too often seen people use the office facilities as their own personal domain

One guy at my last work place - rocked up around 10am in the morning then took his buddy for a coffee outside the office - go down to lunch he's in the lunch room. Go for a fag still in lunch room. Use the toilet and he's in the break out room holding court ! go figure yet he is still a valuable employee obviously. He stays until 6pm everyday so that makes him...what...

I used to work in our office (last 6 months before begging to be let back luton the tools). My salary was for the hours 8-5. I left at 5 on the dot every day.

I got pilled into a meeting to be told that 'we don't ask people to work late as we don't expect to have to'. I asked if they were willing to pay me for this extra time....they said no.

I politely explained that I would not be giving over my life for free.

They said I wasn't completing my work.

I said 'thats because you give me a very unrealistic workload'.

They let me out of the office shortly afterwards.

I doubled my pay, massively reduced my stress levels and only have to work 5 months of the year.

It's a funny old world. I tend to find office environments are full of vipers, nasty little cowardly back-stabbing keyboard warriors. The less I have to do with them the better. I'd rather be out on a rig having some guy threatening to knock me out.
Sounds a crappy place to work (the office). I guess the office develops a culture and then it continues like that. So a manager will promote someone on the hours they are in because that is what he/ she does and it continues. Offshore can be crazy workloads for certain periods or dead. But it can be a good laugh as long as people aren't doing stupid stuff that puts others at risk.
