Baby death what next ?
Discussion
Just a quick ask if anybody can tell me a sort of chain of evennts please. my grandaughter Matilda died this morning 3 days old.
Can anybody tell me what the hell happens next. At the moment she is in hospital morgue, I know we have to register her death, then is it up to us to sort undetakers ect I assume,
Just if anybody can do a sort of list of events that will be needed to be done.
She was going to be taken from Leeds to Glasgow or London by air ambulance, but never made it, Just so glad I gave to air ambulance via pistonheads a few years ago,
tried google but make anything out.
Thanks Andy

Terrible news, very sorry to hear this. Thoughts are with you and your family.
The hospital ward will have a system where they can arrange the funeral director (they'll have a preferred local service) or you can arrange your own. They will be very well versed in how things go and usually can arrange all as well as counselling if desired.
The death cert will be done by the hospital doctor and will be available for collection from the hospital offices at the morgue. This is then taken (usually by the family) to the register office to register the unfortunate death.
Bear in mind that a death certificate can be delayed if it is felt (depending on the circumstances of the death) that a post mortem/referral to to coroner is required.

My sincere condolences. You might want to take on the responsibility of registering the death as new parents might find it particularly harrowing especially if the birth has only just (or not even) been registered.. Appointments are usually made online now - check out your County Council's website. This is a gloomy read but you mind find it helps you in terms of what to do.

Andy,
I am so very, very sorry for your loss. Sadly, I went through something similar with a newphew in 2006.
I will number this for clarity's sake.
1. Register the death. The hospital will be able to advise you on this. As far as the grieving process goes the hospital will not force the parents to 'part' with the body. We were told the NHS used to do this and then years later people would sue or complain that they were unable to properly grieve. Now its standard practice to let the parents have as much time as is needed.
2. The Undertakers will guide you through the next stages, but if memory serves there was no charge for their base-model coffin (I am sorry, I do not know the correct terminology here). I seem to remember him saying that most Funeral Directors/Parlous will not charge, but I cannot be 100% sure on this i'm afraid. It's a plain white box. Anything fancy will cost.
3. Depending on your religious beliefs you will need to book the Officiator. They will give you a list of dates and times which are available, which you should check/cross reference with the funeral director. Maybe the Funeral Director will already have this information, please check.
4. You will run through the timings of the service with your Officiator. You will have a meeting to confirm want readings etc... you would like, if any.
I hope this is of some help to you.
