Back to school I've noticed that I'm coming across noticeably less orphaned elastic bands... Did the summer holidays kill the craziest of craze, or is it still ongoing?

My 11 year old niece has just bought a book showing her how to make all sorts of random crap that no one will want. I suspect for now it is still very much alive - until the next thing.

The fact that it is so cheap for parents to support will help prolong its life I suspect.

Apparently they have some random potentially slightly poisonous chemical in them so they may be becoming less popular soon

I visited one of our suppliers last week - they've got (probably literally) millions of the things clogging up the place. A few months ago they couldn't sell them fast enough.

Flash in the pan I'd say.

I'm weaving our left over loom bands into rear tyres for the M5, I'll report back from a hedge soon.

Judging by my children and their friends, it's not dead yet but the peak has passed. If I was holding stock I'd be shifting to a minimum.

Deader than a dead thing in our house - shame really, it was a pain finding them everywhere - but you couldn't argue with how long it kept them occupied or indeed the cost! I bought ours enough to bathe for less than a single playstation game. Creative, real world, learning skills etc - R.I.P. Loombands.

Do you think the makers will stretch them out for Christmas?

I was impressed with my children's school - they managed to monetise it in aid of a local charity by getting the children to make and sell them at their summer fete.

Our two lads (6 & 11) went mad for them over the summer - they had thousands of the bloody things, but only ever made about 5 small bracelets between them.

They are currently stuffed into a Pringles tube under their respective beds and soon to be binned, along with the many other broken and faddy toys that are cluttering the loft and cellar.
