That I've become the 'grown up' in the relationship with my parents.
I mentioned this the other day to a couple of mates who just stared back at me, nodding sagely.

Sometimes.
At other times i still attempt to be breathtakingly childish, much to the amusement of my Mother & Step-mother and annoyance of my Father.

Mum used to say 'stop telling tales' and I used to think she meant I was lying, not till I found my self saying it to my daughter did it click.
That is what it means, isn't it?It just means, I don't want to hear it.
Not saying she didn't believe me, just that I didn't need to go running to tell her about everything my brother or mate had done wrong that annoyed me.
"Mum, mum, mum, Nick got into trouble at school today."
"Stop telling tales."
"I'm not!"
"You are!"
"I'm not!!"
"Hmmm?"
She wasn't saying ever saying she didn't believe me, just that she didn't think I should be grassing on everyone I guess.
We spoke about this the other night and most people said they didn't get it either until they had kids and started to say it to them.

Seems both definitions are correct...
1. A recital of events or happenings; a report or revelation: told us a long tale of woe.
2. A malicious story, piece of gossip, or petty complaint.
3. A deliberate lie; a falsehood.
4. A narrative of real or imaginary events; a story.
5. Archaic A tally or reckoning; a total.

It makes more sense in the above context looking back though...

I had always wondered why you would be electrocuted if you stuck a metal fork in a toaster but could place a metal fork on a electric hob ring and the fork would just get hot!
It was so obvious when someone explained it to me!
Good - explain it to me then cos I'd love to know!It was so obvious when someone explained it to me!
I've killed about 4 toasters in my time so this information would be useful
