I think that would be the biggest excitement, buying things for friends and family.
No point in being that wealthy if you can't change other peoples lives.
Sounds nice in theory, but they won't appreciate it in the long run and will end up resenting you.

After I sobered up, I would call up David Attenborough's people as well as Ranulph Fiennes and pay what ever it would take to go out for lunch with them and sit there like a stupid school boy as they told tales, Would be awesome.

Plus I would see the Titanic, the Mariana Trench, maybe Everest as well, who knows but a lot of amazing places would be ticked off my list.

Real life can wait,

I wouldn't keep buying them stuff for life just house car etc
If they're not grateful then I have the wrong friends!

They'll keep coming back for more.

What is most peoples' motivation to get up and go to work? Pay for the roof over their head, save up for a nice car, a nice holiday? You will have taken that away from them.

If you are going to give money to friends, you have to give them enough so they never have to work again.

Yep agreed - the initial "giving the car keys" would really be great for the giver and the receiver but I do worry about the long term impact.

I would like to set up a number of small businesses - coffee shop, chippie, nursery / school, anything with animals - really anything that would benefit my local area. I would then employ people with drive and allow them a percentage of the profits as an insentive.

What's the attraction of, say, an 8 bedroom house if you don't have, or plan to have a family big enough to fill it? I know you can put up a bunch of guests every now and then, but for the rest of the time, don't you find unused rooms totally depressing? I know I do. I have a 2 bedroom flat, 1 bedroom is spare and even then I never want to go into it.

Although I do appreciate a home with nice grounds, and probably very few of these are 3 beds, so I guess you might aswell have both if you can't have them seperately.

I would pay Colin Furze a salary and all materials costs for a few years to see what he would come up with. It would be like a Mr Fox to Bruce Wayne.

Not to be a downer either, but if you gave a pal £1 million, would they not lose 400k of it to tax anyway?
Are gifts not exempt?
PETs (potentially exempt transfers) - you have to cross the road carefully for 7 years wink
Even then any IHT would be the responsibility of the estate of the deceased.

The recipient of the gift is not liable for any tax.
It ain’t necessarily so

( according to HMRC anyway http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/inheritancetax/pass-money-p...

"However, if you die within 7 years of making a gift and the gift is valued at more than the Inheritance Tax threshold, Inheritance Tax will need to be paid on its value, either by the person receiving the gift or by the representatives of the estate"

However if the OP wants to send me the cash I will take my chances.....smile

Ive never understood the desire for a massive house. Then again, some people (obviously not on PH) would wonder why I'd need more than one car.

I'd be happy with a modest 3 bed with a garage large enough for 4 cars. In it, I'd keep a large family car such as an E63 AMG estate, along with a car of my wife's choosing. I'd store other numerous cars in a managed hanger/warehouse somewhere nearby and rotate them in and out of the other two garage spaces as I felt like it.

Very few of the cars would be expensive to purchase initially, but I'd spend silly amounts of money restoring every one of them to perfect condition. That isn't not to say I wouldn't buy a new F12 or similar, but I'd be a very happy chappy drving about in a fully restored mini or mk1 golf gti.

I like the idea of building a fully functional restoration workshop and employing a master restorer/teacher who can educate me to do it properly myself, rather than just paying somebody to do it for me. I'd find great satisfaction in learning and doing it myself.

I'd do the same for other skills too like golf, archery, flying, snooker etc. Not a jack of all trades, but mildy proficient at a select few.

I'd travel the world experiencing all of the adrenaline fuelled activities on offer. Those flying squirrel suit/base jumping type things look phenomenal. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2xmAWS4akE#t=103)

Assuming I dont die doing that, I'd spend time accruing life stories to tell the grandchildren.

Obviously family and close friends would be free of financial burden should they wish it. I know one wouldn't want a penny off me.

I think I'd set up a museum of sorts (read as big collection of random machinery) and fill it with as many working aircraft, locomotives, cars, bikes, trucks, busses, military machinery as I could legally be allowed to fly/drive/ride/fire/use.

Also my home would have to be in the grounds, I'd like to have an underground bunker fully set up for the end of days but with a modest house on the surface so I could pass off as the museum's caretaker!
