I'm usually at rugby at 11am on Remembrance Sunday. We always explain to the kids what we're doing and why, and I always find it rather emotional looking over the pitches and seeing 600+ kids and parents all standing in silence to pay their respects. You could hear a pin drop, and whether people were choosing to remember relatives, the forces in general or what they wanted for dinner, it didn't matter, as everyone else respected the silence around them, so they could think on whatever made most sense for them.
This year, I wasn't at the club. We had a tournament at the club itself, and I was coaching kids at the overflow sports fields we use in such a situation. Just like every year, we stopped for the two minutes at 11:00.
The idiots playing football on the neighbouring pitches? They just carried on regardless, so instead of a quiet moment of reflection, we had an uninterrupted barrage of screaming and shouting parents on the sidelines in the field next door to get in the way.
Whether people choose to wear a poppy or not should be up to them, and they shouldn't be judged for it either way. Failing to respect the silence is beneath contempt though.
