I watched Human Traffic on Friday last week - reminded me that I'd forgotten what the world was like when people only had a land line.
Only about 3 people know my landline number. I have really enjoyed using it again over the last few months, especially since i got a new cord that reaches my sofa from the base. Being slightly younger, I've always had a mobile since going to first school. That was when they were just for emergencies, and then it developed into getting a phone with "Snake", then texting, then web browsing, then all sorts of apps, then cameras, then sat navs, then Siri (has good potential but most facilities aren't as good unless in the US). It's exciting to see what will come next.
In regards to if it was better before, I can't comment as it's been part of youth. That being said, it should not excuse manners. People who have their phones out when talking to someone else etc.
So many people care more about the persevered life on Facebook these days than their actual life itself.

It is just a glorified two way radio. We had a party line when I was a nipper, and no, that was not a party as in having fun, it meant sharing a land line with another subscriber due to shortage in line plant. Pick the phone up and listen before pressing the button on the 746 (brown or green).
The world was the same place essentially, it is just that mobile radios have allowed the village idiots to announce themselves. e.g. They can now phone home from the fruit aisle to ask if banana's are required. Or walk around with a blue tooth ear 'ole thingy pretending to be Captain Scarlet.

On the up side if I'm having a quiet day at work I can go shopping, to the gym do jobs etc without having to be sat in front of my PC all day long. On the downside I can be contacted out of hours. I rarely take my phone out though if off the clock.
I remember when we used to organise a night out and everyone would turn up to the agreed place on time. Not change the time and the venue at the last minute.
My wife also does the phone/text the people we are going to see whilst on the journey. We have agreed to be there at 4pm
I'll text when we leave (why?)
I'll text we are on the M4/M5/M6 (why?)
I'll text we are in your town.
I'll text we've parked.
I'll check us in (facebook).
Ok, its great if there is a problem, traffic etc but I dont get the need for constant everything is ok updates.

Mobile phones were a brilliant innovation and changed both how we worked and played.
The internet is amazing and world wide web more so.
Smartphones and tablets have changed things again: I'd argue much for the better.

king cell phone and look it up, what has the world come to?!?I was genuinely puzzled, it was something we could look up, we would both be wiser on the spot and we didn't have to continue a pointless argument
.There were always numpties. It's the same with cars, cars aren't the problem, it's the numpties that drive them. And it's not like the internet in the past was any better, people just needed to wait to get home to prove how stupid they were to the world.

Mobile phones were useful an unusual. Something of a status symbol back in 1989 when I first started using them. We had an "office" Mobile, an Excel M2 I think enforce that it was a Motolooa thing, a "brick"
The rot began about 1995 when they became cheap and easy to get.
Having a mobile is now a "right" not a privilege, or something that costs to own. They are ubiquitous, as they were a boon for the late 1980s businessman they are now a tool of the trade for drug dealers, criminals and terrorists.
I recall when I got my fiirst mobile it came with a leaflet on the Wireless Telegraphy Act, basically warning of no misuse.
Mobile phines shouod be registered devices with named users for each set. There should not be PAYG untraceable sims etc.
You should be able to buy all the tech you want but you should pay for it. £600 for an iPhone, an annual £150 license proper checks to confirm who you are.
It would stop the likes of the innit Bruv moron I had to endure on a train last night swearing and organising his sordid life in some bastardised form of English, or the adjacent mouth breathing chav slapper who sat staring at her screen for an hour without expression.
Yeah I know, never travel Standard class.
But to be serious, the fact that we can communicate globally is truly amazing. The other day I passed a pub, the subject of a family joke from decades before I was born. I snapped a shot of it and within seconds my aunt in Calofornia was seeing it and exchanging messages with me about it.
We can take work or play with us, navigate strange cities, turn the lights or heating in at home, find a restaurant, and answer pretty much any query we have about pretty much anything in seconds.
Oh and we can still call home to say we will be late.
I think on balance, we are better off.
