THE Winter jacket recommendations
Discussion
My outdoor gear (tops) is a a blend of:
Mountain Equipment (fleeces), Montane (I like their shells), Buffalo (especially as a single layer), Arc'teryx, Halti and Haglofs.
Haglofs is probably my favourite for everyday use. Halti ski jacket for when it gets really cold (has been good to -40 but never feels too warm). Buffalo makes a great all round jacket - including skiing.

Just received my Montane Prism. Really pleased with it, nice and light but will easily be warm enough for most town work and I have a decent Musto BR1 for when it gets soaking wet!
I ordered mine last Tuesday, in red, got 5% off - then found this thread.......arrived on Friday afternoon. Very nice - may need to start using it soon. Meridius said:

You have to be a complete chav or a football hooligan to wear one of those. It's certainly very working class, as is pretty much anything by Stone Island.http://www.stoneisland.com/it/stone-island/giaccon...
I'm afraid you'll have to prove you are one of the above before you can buy one.

10 years ago maybe, the brands changed quite a bit in the last few years and is drawing a different customer base as the hooligan types arent impressed with the, judging by the brands facebook page, "all that gay hipster stuff" they make now.Meridius said:

I've read through this entire thread and narrowed it down to a few choices. Last year I bought a Barbour coat which looks great (very fashionable and suits my style) but to be honest it's not warm enough for me. I'm skinny and feel the cold.
For milder temperatures:
Water resistant
What do you guys think? Are the first two overkill? I get fed up of laying 4 layers in the winter just to try to stay warm. It would be great if I could just wear jeans, a shirt, a light cotton jumper and a coat in Jan/Feb while feeling toasty.
I've got the Montane Prism jacket, used it for the Inca Trail and was nice and toasty. I combined it with a proper waterproof too, decent bit of kit. For milder temperatures:

I guess a lot of it depends on how much one cares about others' opinions. You can either wear what you like the look, features and quality of or you can buy stuff based on what you believe other people think of it, which seems pretty messed up.FTR: I don't own any Stone Island stuff.

I love my Haglofs Mojo! You know what Haglofs excel at? Sleeves! So many other manufacturers seem to get the sleeves wrong and you end up with really bad cold spots.
Yup. I have Haglofs lined shell, ski jacket and hiking trousers, plus boots. The boots were fantastic in a 40 day hike. Rawwr said:

What are the winter jacket aficionados verdicts on this. The fur would have to be zipped off but I think I quite like it. Is Canada Goose a bit council these days?

Not sure about that precise jacket, but I would say in general Canada Goose is not very practical in the UK, and it seems like this would be similar since it's rated -20 to -10. They're very good quality, but the whole point in having a jacket like this is stable cold periods below 0C. For most of the UK it will be too warm, and since winter is wet it also defeats the purpose of wearing a down jacket (although the outer jacket is thick so it would take time to soak in to the down compared to some others). This comes from someone who has one for quite a few years now - but I live in Norway and so it does a great job where I am. If I am walking and it's say 5C it's no problem with the jacket open and just a t-shirt under it since it's that warm. If it's raining I will use another jacket.http://www.canadagoose.com/us/en/borden-bomber-796...
