Erm...

We recently bought our toddler some Brio - a simple wooden trainset with some trains. I used to have a load of it as a kid.

I've found myself really enjoying playing with it, almost as much as he does. I am 32.

Today we were scouring the interweb to look for some bits to add on to it for xmas for him - I knew there were some good accessories but I am really impressed at how much there is available and how it all fit's the theme and does different things.

Basically I am worried about how much I want the Brio, not only for him, but also so I can play with it. It is just so satisfying, well made and I'm getting really into it.

Do I need help?

We have a massive box of it from when my eldest was younger. My eldest is not interested in it (he's 6). We spent fortunes on it all...

^ I assumed it was a thread about pens from some one with dyslexia.

Check oh Big Jigs as well, it's 'compatible' and they have some interesting stuff.
Ikea sometimes have compatible stuff as well.

My lad is 5 now, I was most disappointed when he told me he could do it himself now and didn't need daddies help to make tracks anymore.

I still have stacks of Brio from when I was a sprog. I used to make stations and bridges for it out of Lego. Good times.

Ikea do a compatible train set that is a lot cheaper than your actual Brio.

I'll bet it only contains straights and 90 degree corners. No points.
On the plus side the meatballs in the buffet car will be ace!

The Ikea one doesn't fit as well, the male part of the join is a bit big (That's Swedes for you.) Big Jig is much better.

My daughter has just turned 5.

She's into Lego.

I started her on Duplo, then Basic, then Lego Friends / Lego Disney Princess and we've just dived straight into Lego Technic.

If I had a son, this would be much worse (Having said that she was assisting with changing a brake bulb today too ..)

I hear most brands are compatible. Just picked up a set for my boy for Christmas, and I am looking forward to getting my hands on it too (31) hehe

I bought an ex's nephew some Brio vehicles from the ELC a few years ago for his birthday. They cost me no more than £20, and it was more as a small present to occupy him with when he was bored of the big presents he was getting from the rest of their family.

Came to the day, he opened all of his presents eventually getting round to the little box of Brio and it was almost like an epiphany for the little guy! His face lit up and he was completely inseparable from them - taking to hiding under the dining table playing with them. When picked up to come and play with some of the other (bigger, pricier) presents, he immediately threw a strop until he had the Brio back!

My mood that day can really only be pictorially described thus:

It's a great excuse for me to go to ikea to pick more bits up. I went the week before last and got a turntable with a few more straight bits for about £6.

It doesn't fit quite as well, but it's not that bad. Our son is only 2.5 so we've got a few more years of train fun smile

Brilliant stuff.

My nipper had great fun (as did i) making some very nice, complex layouts, with different trains taking different routes doing different things.

Missus gave a huge box to her friend when my boy grew out of it (he's onto lego technic and scalextric now), was massively pissed off when I visited and the dad had just laid out a simple oval (no points, sidings, multiple platforms, nothing). That's one kid that womankind will never have to worry about...

Our first little one is due next spring. I can't wait to get playing with this kinda stuff. I never had Brio as a kid as it was quite expensive, but used to love going into Early Learning Centre as they always has a layout setup in the front of the store.

So excited about getting all my old lego down from the loft biggrin

BTW I'm 30.

Were also a fan of Big Jigs train set, be careful when entering that into Google.

There do a whole hose of accessories, tracks, buildings, bridges etc. Sadly better to order online as whilst some independent shops stock it they don't often do the whole range.

Other option is to look out for stuff on ebay or car boot sales.
