What have you got planned for today LD?

Just curious really.
Just going into town really. The noise of it all helps. Library to read today's paper. Tomorrow 9.30am is interview day though! (for a dead end 9-5 it has to be said!)
Don't think of it as a dead-end job. Think of it as a new start, a new future, the start of the rest of your life, and a way to a means to an end.
Exactly. I work in Telecoms but a few times I've taken voluntary redundancy without a job to go to because the package was too good to turn down. In those times I took what would ordinarily be called 'dead-end' jobs just to keep myself out of the house, knowing that it might be a few months until I found my next proper telecoms job. I had some of the most fun times ever in those roles. I earned enough cash to cover my bills, learned a little bit about an industry I otherwise wouldn't know about and even managed to spin the experience into a few positive lines on my CV.

Good luck and try to think of the bigger picture about what you might get out of the experience as a whole.

Passed the first stage of the interview so that's great. But it isn't. I just couldn't send my CV with such a huge gap on it so said I'd been self employed for the past 4 months. The next 'final' interview is Tuesday. And they want proof of activity, which I haven't got.
I'm stuck!

Well done on getting through the first stage... but.... Of all the things you could have said!

"I've spent four months at home getting the house fixed up as our family is about to expand" - would have been a good one.

What kind of job is it for? ...and what have you allegedly been self-employed doing?

Tell them you've been working as a male escort? What proof of activity do they want?

Seriously, all you've got to do is think up something plausible (we don't know, based on the info you've given out), and say it never got off the ground.

Well this afternoon was a phone interview- and I had to talk about my current 'position'... To back track and say it didn't get off the ground isn't ideal. I know I made a mess of it but how could I say I'd been sitting on my backside for months.
The feedback I got from the woman was great, she said I appeared friendly, came across well, and positive haha! Thought about this thread and thought if only she knew.
But fact is- she was impressed, why does my CV matter so bloody much...

Had quite a few friends blag it on the CV when they needed to fill in the blanks, got any mates with their own businesses who you could put down as a reference?

Always say you were travelling or self employed.

Or caring for a relative. That's a fairly broad church.

But even if you don't get this job, don't let that deter you for applying for another.

I maintain there is no such thing as a 'dead end job' nowadays. The percentage of the UK workforce who just don't give a fk would astound you.

It doesn't take much to stand head and shoulders above them.

Bit daft lying without considering how the lie may play out; can you get away with saying you've been doing something relatively unverifiable, like dogwalking?

Haven't read the whole post but regarding the original question and French:

OP - Look into doing French tutoring? My niece is currently being tutored - found the tutor advertised one a website, all the tutoring is done over the net through web cam and audio conversations - you don't need to leave the house, and can get paid pretty good money! Pretty sure there is a market for it, especially if you price yourself aggressively - I would be doing something similar myself if I could speak another language!

Just get some tablets - something like Venlafaxine. Everything will then become just great.

I wouldn't bother with therapy. At 31 you will be die cast anyway and just end up spunking money out for nothing.

Just take the pills and crack on. Have a child - you won't have time to mope around thinking about your life. life as you know it will change and your child will become the centre of your universe.

I feel for you OP.

Any change is a big step but just by coming on here and saying hi is a good step in the right direction.

Any update on the job interview?

I'd say that aside from some form of counselling a fresh job (which will give you a lot of personal confidence) and knuckling down to some exercise will do you a world of good. Do you like music? Get some headphones and get out walking, jogging, running, climbing. It really will help you in so many ways. A body not in motion rusts from the inside and it'll also help you sleep too mate.

You have more skills in your approach to people and language than 95% of the people in the world so you are already top 5% without even trying. Add 1% effort to that and you're practically a fking Jedi. Actually, you know what you are? You're a Linchpin in waiting...

Have a read through a book called Linchpin by Seth Godin. The Lizard Brain has you under its thumb and you need to firmly tell it to fk right off. This isn't about depression or anything else you may have going on, but it's about putting doubt aside and all the negative feelings you've expressed on here are not you. None are you. None are you talking either. It's fking doubt and the scared fking lizard telling you "you're st, it's too hard, you can't do it, let's just stay at home."

Trust me, read a bit of that and it'll change your approach to a lot of things. You're younger than most people in your situation, clearly are intelligent, have a good missus next to you and can converse in le fromage. You are filled with skills so keep pushing yourself as you'll get through this and we're all behind you.

Linchpin (read it, ignore the tag-line it's very much applicable to you) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linchpin-Indispensable-car...

Be cool, mate. Keep us up to date.

What a brilliant encouraging reply! Really appreciate this mate- thanks for this.

The main interview is happening today- I'm desperately trying to think about things in a far more positive light. I kid you not- since this thread I have tried much harder and the other half has noticed.
It'll take time but I guess I am lucky in the grand scheme of things- I do have a roof over my head, food and a fantastic girlfriend. Sure, I feel compared to many that things are a bit st but only I can make that change.
Let's hope I can continue and be positive. I look at other people on the streets and see the state of some of them and just keep thinking that I can't end up like that.

Just this very second found out I've got the job! Can't quite believe it- subject to backgrounds checks though so not in the bag just yet. I'm happy yet terrified. It really is putting myself outside of my comfort zone. Bang in the middle of Manchester City Centre...

Well done fella. Sounds like you're making loads of little steps into turning over a new leaf. Call this a big step though!

Hope you and the other half are going to celebrate a little.
