Plainly put, I don't want someone's actions to put my son at risk of some nutter taking a shine to him and taking an opportunity to do god knows what.

True, the risk is probably less than 0.00001%, but it is a completely avoidable risk that I'm unwilling to take.
Fair enough, I don't think like that and I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. We've each got to do what we feel best and that's obviously what you're doing.

Aren't you being a totally irresponsible parent by letting him go to school, have friends, going to after school clubs, taking part in sports and every other activity that exposes him to the outside world then.....? I don't know how old your son is, but how are you going to stop him from entering the digital age himself, when he wants to use the Internet and have his own phone?

Or are you going to lock him in some dungeon for his own protection from the terrible outside world....?

I know that my daughters school are very careful.

There is a child in school who could be at risk if certain people discover her whereabouts (not 100% sure who, but think I know). They don't ban sharing, but ask that parents ensure that only their children are in the photo. In the circumstances it seems like a level headed response and more practical than an unenforceable outright ban,

Seems an odd thing to do post photo's of someone else's kids in a them being the focus of the post capacity. In the same way it would be odd saying 'here's a photo of my mate's new car' not sure why you'd do it?

I recently marshalled at a local parkrun (where I know most of the regulars) and photographed pretty much everyone as the passed me to then post on the specific parkrun facebook page. No one complained and most people tagged themselves/friends, a handful were (accompanied) children. It never occurred to me anyone might object - it was about the event not specifically a photo of any individual.

Very different though posting up a photo in the context of 'here is XXX's child'.

"Our daughter with her best friend visiting Santa", is odd?

"My brothers car before and after I washed/waxed/Detailed it", is also odd?

I think you have misunderstood me. The two examples you give are pretty much cases where the subject is almost incidental and the real reason for posting is an event the subject happens to be part of.

The first example - 'our daughter and her friend visiting santa' - is very different to 'here's a pic of our friends daughter'.

In the second example it's about the difference before/after the was/wax. Simply posting a picture of your brothers car is a bit odd yeah, in more of a 'why?' than a sinister way.
