I thought Black Friday - in non American BS - was the Friday before Xmas where you finished work early and got pissed?

Really pissed.

Not 'buy a toaster day'.

All I can see is Black Friday adverts on the TV. Are there actually any good deals? Or st deals but lots of good advertising to make you think the deals are good?
90% st deals IMO.
It's most likely the crap that no one wants, or end of line stock that needs shifting, much like the famous Next Boxing Day sale that gets people queueing from 6:00am, all hype and no substance once you are there.

Isn't that "Black Eye Friday" where everyone gets p*ssed and have a mass punch-up?

I see that Tesco and Argos are also showing the "please wait, heavy traffic, blah blah" waiting page.

Yup, it's just been hijacked in the last couple of years by the meeja to announce the flogging of tat.

Still not complaining, I bought a shiny new TV yesterday with nearly 50% off. getmecoatbiggrin

Mrs S is busy shopping at Sears and JC Penny, only downside is we live in France. That said even after tax and import it's still saving us money by not paying overinflated local prices.

Well I got caught up in the hype, I am Scottish so the thought of a bargain gets me foaming at the trousers.

Showed up to my local Asda at 7:45 and was 40th in the queue.

the store opened at 8 and within 20 seconds the 20 or so teles had been grabbed and were away. Some truly horrible specimens picking up two teles at a time. I got barged out the way by a bear of a woman.

A little underwhelmed by this black Friday crap, I went because for £140 for a 40 inch is a bargain, the likelihood is it will be a piece of st and only worth £200.

I sat online at the argos "sale" last night, seen a steam cleaner, oh reduced from £140 to £30. Hold on who pays £140 for a steamer, quick google shows it for £40 elsewhere rolleyes

Feeling curious, I sat in the Currys online queue. I looked at 2-3 of their "deals" and could find the same product for the same price, or less, elsewhere and usually not in any sale. It's all just targeted marketing for the stupid and ignorant.

I do hope the police will be charging the retailers who failed to put in their own security and crowd control.

It's bad enough importing this American bullsh*t as a means of fleecing the poor, but when the taxpayer has to subsidise it, that takes the fecking biscuit (Jammie Dodgers at 50% off - yay!)

Some of the scenes of people fighting to get a 40" Polaroid TV.....running through the store desperate to grab something so they can say they got a great deal.

Police have been called to supermarkets across the UK amid crowd surges as people hunt for "Black Friday" offers.

Greater Manchester Police appealed for calm after attending five Tesco stores, making "at least two" arrests, and a Trafford store was closed shortly after the sale began at 00:01 GMT on Friday.
One of the Tesco Blanpunckteput TV was only 720p

Ah, ASDA. Whenever I want to feel like a handsome, well dressed sort of chap I go for a walk around my local ASDA. It never fails to make me feel like an Armani clad Adonis.

I heard on the radio this morning some delightful woman in Glasgow ended up getting lifted as she got into a fistfight with the manager of a store as she tried to buy a dozen heavily discounted coffee makers. All to sell on Ebay no doubt to subsidise her benefits. Ah, the poverty..

Nothing brings out the scum like an overhyped version of the fire sale, that's for sure.

So, thanksgiving is an American national/religious holiday, which was taken to America by the early british settlers (yet was one of many religious days removed from our Calendar in 1536 during the reformation)
In modern day America the holiday is a big deal, and the day after the holiday is a big shopping day as people buy for Xmas, so big of a deal to American retailers it's known as Black Friday
And so we have Black Friday because............???????

I tried to watch that video on BBC but it said it wasn't working. They should probably invest in a queue system.

Also, £185 gets you a 40" Toshiba LED online without having to battle with a bunch of tramps.
