I have noticed a lot of foliage on rugger players recently; what's it all about?
No doubt down to androgenic substances and other performance enhancing stuff

They support Movember usually.

Because you obviously have slow/light/whispy beard growth and old hairs will be dying and falling out as new ones grow so it'll always look crap. This is nothing to do with masculinity, but purely genetics.

If I didn't shave for 3.5 weeks I'd look like an orthodox rabbi trying out for ZZ Top. I'd be tripping over the bloody thing. But I don't want a beard.
Depends how long you want your beard doesn't it.

I haven't shaved for 2 months now other than trimming to shape mine because I want to grow a long beard.

Go to a proper barbers and have then trim/shape it for you. Only costs around a tenner wink I get mine done once a month, got a pretty thick beard now smile Once it's shaped it's easy to keep on top of, but I've sacked trimming it myself and just pay the barber instead.

For upkeep I use Moroccan oil and have a couple combs with smooth edges on the teeth.

What I've found hardest to grow/style is the moustache, best to start combing & 'train' the hairs sooner than later as its a pain when they get longer, plus it's a nightmare eating/drinking if your moustache gets long as it dips in your tea, drips on your tie/shirt and you look a right prick in work covered in tea stains frown I use some moustache wax here but only when it's dry, usually oil it first with the beard, leave it an hour or so then it's ok for the wax....doesn't work as well when it's oiled. Well worth getting a moustache comb as well....you'll go nuts otherwise with a normal comb!

Here's the oil I use, bit expensive but much better than the cheap stuff wink Don't need loads just a few drops.

It takes a while to grow properly, I looked a right for the first month! Looked like a hobo but had 7/8 weeks off work so thought sod it! wink

Just keep growing it then get to the barbers and have it properly shaped.
Been on the lookout for some wax and a comb, ordered both! Ta.

I'm a reasonably hirsute gentleman myself and had considered beardage as an option to reduce the shaving faff. Think I'll abandon that plan.

I've had a beard on and off for around a year, the current one has been growing since the summer. Best advice has already been given regarding oil, training the moustache etc.

I get a mixture of comments but mostly postive, expecially from women which I wasn't expecting but I suppose they're 'trendy' at the moment.

I personally loathe beards but will grudgingly concede that they look 'ok-ish' on the right sort of bloke. Namely Father Christmas and Captain Birdseye.

You need to be of the age and stature to pull it off. A full, luxuriant, beard as sported nowadays by Hoxton's media wkers looks ridiculous on anyone under the age of 40.

Likewise any sort of facial hair on anyone small and skinny. Weaselly Rat Boy isn't a good look.
I haven't shaved since 1992 and my beard is now white, not long enough for Father Christmas but I could start a side line in fish fingers.

A good proportion of international rugby players seem have good quantities of facial hair these days.
One week of growth and I seem to be turning into Paul Hollywood. I've completely skipped grey and gone straight for white... smile

Trimmed my beard to a grade three on Jan the 13th; apart from keeping my neck, cheek bone area, sidies and top lip tidy since then, I've not touched the main body; I've now got a good thick beard going on with 2 months untouched growth.

Just ordered some beard oil as it is a bit dry and wirey and is getting to the stage where it needs a bit of taming, I aim to keep growing it though.

What build oil did you go for? I use apothecary87 milly's vanilla & mango it's not cheap but it smells great and most females have gone crazy for the smell although sadly they don't go crazy for me! http://www.apothecary87.co.uk/product-category/chr...

I trim my moustache and the odd stray but I haven't trimmed my beard since Christmas, although Savills barbers in Sheffield gave it some better shape a couple of weeks ago.

I went for this:http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00L72RIXW/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1425836283&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&keywords=beard+oil&dpPl=1&dpID=419wTvH-FYL&ref=plSrch

It's got great reviews, I've not received it yet but looking forward to its arrival.

Does beard oil make a noticeable difference?

If you are still growing it after 3.5 weeks, then give it up. A beard isn't for you.
I don't understand why?
if you don't have a decent beard in 2-3 weeks of 'ceasing to shave' you never will ...

if you are planning on letting it get to a couple of inches, don't ever trim the moustache, nothing worse than seeing a bushy beard with a less than impressive moustache.

A big difference. I didn't put some on the other day and all my colleagues were commenting how my beard looks scruffy. And I have to agree. Plus you get the nice scent of them. It just keeps everything under control.

As for not trimming moustaches if growing a big beard I have to or I end up eating the mo.

I use a combination of products:

Started with some "Grafter" beard oil from Braw Beard Oils:

http://brawbeardoils.com/product/grafter-beard-oil...

As it gets a bit longer, I have started using some Beard Balm along with a boar bristle brush from Brighton Beard Company:

http://www.thebrightonbeardcompany.co.uk/products/...

http://www.thebrightonbeardcompany.co.uk/products/...

I never trimmed mine for 12 weeks until last week when I bought a new beard trimmer and took it down a wee bit as it was getting mental!

Went for this trimmer:

Anyone recommend a barbers in the Guildford area that do decent beard trimming?

Most of them say they can do it but last time I went to Jacks I lost 6 months growth cause they didn't have a clue...

When I was in So'ton the other day drove past a Barber that offered beard trimming as a service - guess there are more beards down there!!!

Mine is on day eight, there's no way I'm going to compete with some of the Dusty Hills that are bound to be lurking on here.
