Evening all,
I'm sure this will get moved to the health forum but hopefully it will get more input in the lounge.
I'm after some advice on how to keep my beard looking smart while I grow it
Have been growing it for about three and a half weeks now and bar the odd strim of wayward hairs poking out and making me look a bit tramp like, I have let it do its thing. So, now I'm getting some length on my beard I wanna know how best to cultivate it,keep it tidy but let it grow, that sorta thing.
I'm guessing amongst the many PBCD types on PH there must be some beard sporting gentlemen. It doesn't matter what type of beard you have, contrary to the Telegraph we are inclusive types on PH (sometimes). If you are raising the "chin curtain", the "soul patch", the "Zappa" or even the "coptash standard issue", then get involved and give me some beard thoughts/advice.

Keep it trimmed around the neck area and cheeks.
I left mine to grow for about six weeks recently, it's amazing how tatty you start to look if you just let it grow wherever hairs sprout; if you keep the upper cheek area tidy, so any stray hairs that sprout from random places (I get them as far up as just below my eye socket), just get rid of them and neaten that area up, make sure both sides are relatively symetrical.
Also do the same for the neck area, I found just above the Adams apple, anything below that just get rid and make sure there is an even line from just below the jaw line, round to the top of the Adams apple and back round the other side to the jaw area or just below.
It's amazing what a difference just tidying up those areas makes; reminds me I need to have a tidy up.
Obviously a lot depends on how full your beard is and how well it grows; if it is patchy then it'll always look a mess, if it is full, thick and un patchy, like mine, then you can easily make it look tidy.
Generally mine is clippered grade II every couple of weeks and trimmed elsewhere as needed, sometimes I just let it grow but still keep the other areas hair free so it remains tidy looking.

Seems I am doing the right things.
I am trimming cheek hair and neck hair to keep those areas looking tidy and also getting rid of the random WHITE hairs that seem to keep popping up in the chin region.
Looking forward to having a full man rug on the go. The OH isn't a big fan but she'll come round once I get the lumberjack outfit for the bedroom

Go to a proper barbers and have then trim/shape it for you. Only costs around a tenner I get mine done once a month, got a pretty thick beard now Once it's shaped it's easy to keep on top of, but I've sacked trimming it myself and just pay the barber instead.
For upkeep I use Moroccan oil and have a couple combs with smooth edges on the teeth.

What I've found hardest to grow/style is the moustache, best to start combing & 'train' the hairs sooner than later as its a pain when they get longer, plus it's a nightmare eating/drinking if your moustache gets long as it dips in your tea, drips on your tie/shirt and you look a right prick in work covered in tea stains
I use some moustache wax here but only when it's dry, usually oil it first with the beard, leave it an hour or so then it's ok for the wax....doesn't work as well when it's oiled. Well worth getting a moustache comb as well....you'll go nuts otherwise with a normal comb!

for the first month! Looked like a hobo but had 7/8 weeks off work so thought sod it!
Just keep growing it then get to the barbers and have it properly shaped.

I don't understand why?If I didn't shave for 3.5 weeks I'd look like an orthodox rabbi trying out for ZZ Top. I'd be tripping over the bloody thing. But I don't want a beard.
I personally loathe beards but will grudgingly concede that they look 'ok-ish' on the right sort of bloke. Namely Father Christmas and Captain Birdseye.
You need to be of the age and stature to pull it off. A full, luxuriant, beard as sported nowadays by Hoxton's media wkers looks ridiculous on anyone under the age of 40.
Likewise any sort of facial hair on anyone small and skinny. Weaselly Rat Boy isn't a good look.

A good proportion of international rugby players seem have good quantities of facial hair these days.
