Thanks everybody I've got a lot to do today, priority getting to BMW to get the car key recoded, speak to insurance get a lock smith out, speak to CID and get some more Christmas presents sorted.

It's going to be a lean Christmas, the running total so far to replace everything is mounting up, the bds even stole our wine frown

No sleep either.

That sucks, really sorry to hear it.
Hope you can get things sorted before Christmas, and still try and enjoy.

I need to speak to my Wife now, I'm overseas and she's selling stuff on Gumtree!

I won't be selling anything from home again, the bloke messaged me through facebook, police reckons he could see my full profile which has hundreds of pics many with our stuff on (innocently) and they've cased us when they came.

Be careful.

And that's why living your life on line for everyone to see is a bad idea. Decided a year or so ago to stop posting on fb, realised all I'm doing is living my life through an open window.

Can't believe all the Xmas pressies have gone, absolute low life twunts

I feel for you, I know exactly what it's like, a few years back I was burgled as I slept. Whereas the value of the items they took was low, it was always the thought that someone had been in my home.

Scumbags, I hope your insurance sees you right.

No time is a good time to get burgled but Christmas must be one of the worse, utter bds.

Same here; 8 years ago we were burgled whilst we were asleep, nothing of major value was taken, the Police reckon they were opportunist thieves and addicts due to what was was stolen and how, also the medecine cabinet in the kitchen was rifled through, fortunately they didn't venture uostairs.

Even though my kids were fortunately away at friends that night, it mentally scarred the youngest for years, it made me paranoid too about making sure everything was locked and for a couple of years after, the first thing that I did after getting up in the morning was to glance downstairs into the hall to make sure the front door wasn't wide open.

It's horrible and a violation but you do learn to get over it, takes time though.

Hope the Police were good; they were with us and I hope your insurance company get things sorted quickly.

Sorry to hear your bad news US. We had a very similar burglary a few years ago - entry through french doors at the back of the house, laptop, ipod and TV taken and they found the key for my company car and used it to drive off with their haul. The drawers from the chests of drawers in our bedroom were turned out onto the bed and rooted through. The car was recovered in Manchester 24 hours later after being used in an armed robbery. We never got any of our possessions back and the insurance payout didn't cover what we lost because we didn't have receipts for several of the items that were taken.frown

I fitted "unbreakable" glass in the french doors and sidelights after the experience.

Sorry to hear this, OP.

I'd be seriously tempted in investing the money from the alarm on upgrading your current security on your ground floor windows and doors instead.

How did they get through the French doors?

Terrible news, hope you don't have any issues with insurance paying out.

I remember when living in Camden Town, we were burgled on new year's eve. Came back to the house at 2-3am after a party to find the front door forced open. Must have been an opportunisitic smash and grab as they didn't take any big stuff (e.g. big TV).

The girl I lived with at the time had lots of items stolen, laptop, mobile phones, jewellery and cash. My stuff was apparently so st they only took my old Seiko watch (sentimental value more than anything). Didn't touch my Kindle, books, 9 year old old desktop computer, 10 year old laptop etc! Wasn't sure whether to be happy or insulted!

Interesting point you raise.

How do you prove you had the stuff in the first place for the insurance company? Obviously a lot of stuff if paid for either with cash or if presents wouldn't be covered then?

I guess you could make a video showing everything in each room and then upload the files (somewhere private) on the Internet.

We were broken into about 13 years ago whilst we were home in bed. I came down after hearing a noise and luckily the tts scarpered. My wife had sleepless nights for years after that and still jumps at the slightest sound at night.

Really sorry to hear and I do hope the insurers pay out without too much fuss. We were burgled 6 months back and only just starting to feel normal in our house again.

We had laptops, ipads, jewelry, clothes and cash loaded into my Mum's Discovery 4 which was then driven off and only found (absolutely wrecked) in a forest 60 miles north around 5 weeks later. The scum obviously gave our dog a thump too given how she was after, we're just thankful she wasn't killed or taken.

It was an utterly soul destroying experience but one does get over it, albeit with additional security measures in place. All valuables are now kept in a locked safe and our new Disco's keys are in a separate safe at all times when not being driven. Although no one was in when we were burgled, we now keep doors locked at all times even when we're at home. We're having CCTV installed too at some point.

Chin up and remember Christmas is about spending time with loved ones, the presents/material things don't really matter in the scheme of things.

mmm, not good.

We got done about 5 yrs ago. Wife was on the school run in the afternoon at the time. Laptops, tv, cameras.

About 2 weeks latter, went away for a weekend and the fu-kers broke in again. Same guys as the previous drawers were not touched and it was anything which was not looked for the first time.

Second time - they got nothing.

Many of the houses got done at the same sort of time, it looked like they had worked out how to get in an out quick. Neighbour had there floorboards lifted in the attic to access their stuff - police reckoned they must have had metal detectors.

I really feel for you - I got done over twice in 14 months, the first time they came whilst I was in bed, the second time they "kicked the front door in", although I think it had been the mates of a dodgy lodger I had at the time really, but just made to look like a break in.

The last one was back in 2012, and I still don't feel very comfortable in my own house, which is not a good place to be, but I cannot afford to move, and it is close to all my friends and family. The most upsetting part for me, is not the missing stuff, that can all be replaced, but the fact that my children don't want to stop at my house anymore, in case we get broken into again.

Sympathies OP, we had someone try and get in to our house a few months back and that felt horrible enough. These people are total scum.
I hope you can all still enjoy christmas.

For the stuff without receipts, will credit/debit card bills be any use as proof of purchase?

OP horrid stuff, went through it when my parents house got done over in feb - everything gone, dog missing etc
i fitted a yale alarm as a temp measure for my parents for a bit of reassurance, despite its costs its very good

also put up some security lights for them, got hold of some tv simulators etc, set up alarms that bing bong when the side gate is open (£land door bell with a reed switch)

i guess there is no way to track the ipad without it having a web connection?
