In this county, you're better off 'prepping' for snow which is far more likely to cause you bother in winter (but still rare).
Bog roll
Rope (either for towing or to lash round the wheels as makeshift snow chains)
Spare fuel can
Warm clothing & boots
Food and water
I was going on a journey last week so took all of that.

Looked a right tt on the bus, I can tell you. silly

What kind of emergencies is the bag for though?? most of the stuff is utterly useless if you are on land in the UK. I can see the value if you are sailing in having some of the stuff but I'd assumne the boat has VHF/UHF, life raft, flares etc on it already?

With all due respect it sounds a bit.... "lets offroad...."

Maybe just for a conversation starter...
One of my most stupid typos. Winter coat.
I was trying to tee someone up for some sort of 'breaking the ice' related gag, after the winter boat/conversation starter comments. Obviously no-one was prepared to stoop to my low levels of humour and play along, which is probably for the best.

This thread is starting to make me wonder if I should do some of this mental stuff, like the guy who has 2 weeks worth of water. If my taps stop working and they sell out of bottled water in the supermarkets he's going to live and I'm going to die, it's as simple as that.

I have got keys to an armoury, bunker, MT and the G4 stores here so will be just fine if it goes pear-shaped.

You can keep your bug-out bag containing superglue.... smile

Ok lets call it a The Bag Of Useful st that I keep in the house or suitcase when I travel. Maybe calling it a go bag is a bit much.

I wasn't really planning on using it all in one big emergency, its just easy keep the things that might come in useful when something goes wrong all in one place.

I reckon my kitchen draw of "stuff" will do. Discarded Ikea allan keys and sink washers, etc. Never know when they will come in handy.

Dead batteries, assorted pre-Euro coins and instructions for a breville toaster you no longer own?

I do have an emergency 'toiletries' go bag comprising those little bottles of stuff you get from Boots, a razor, a small bottle of baby oil ( clarification : to shave with if there is any doubt ), and for lightness have even sawn the toothbrush handle in half to save weight and keep the pack small.
Its for those occasions when you get the sudden " Oh and I expect you might be stopping over...? " and there is no time to waste :-)

I have watched a few Youtube vids of people showing off their bug out/72hour/get home bags. Its probably a good idea if you live in America where in certain states you are likely to get your house destroyed by windstorm/flood, hurricane (Sandy, Katrina), eathquakes etc Funny but they have knives, cooking gear, food, multy tool etc etc but never enything to sleep in and keep warm at night. Having a bag with some clothes and water in would be handy but not in the UK

Does guy stockpiling food/water have any weapons stored too? If not, all he's doing is storing supplies for the toughest guy on his street.

Cufflinks would be a good addition to the grab bag.

The number of times I have packed quickly, forgetting to pack cufflinks, is annoying.

Well it isn't as simple as that is it?

We have rather a lot of freshwater present in the uk... You can drink that you know? It doesn't have to be out of a bottle!

I live in the Lake District and have drank out of rivers and lakes on quite a number of occasions when out walking and became thirsty. I don't recall contracting typhoid...

Or if you are paranoid about germs just fill a pan with it and boil it.

I think in our sanitised and pre-packaged society people simply forget that food and water is all around us. For example I shot 2 Pheasants last weekend and ate them. They were yummy smile
