Just wondering if the heating can cope with that coldness.
Some of the poorer people have little heaters in a room they share and that is it. They also have rugs all over the walls for extra insulation. If you stay with a poor family, you can also expect the ice cream to be on the windowsill, they just reach outside to get it...
How warm would a room get in a poor person's house then?

I saw that. Crazy! Do people walk around in -42 saying to each other
A "It's bloody freezing today."
B "No it isn't, it's only -42"
A "Really, it feels much colder, I must be going soft."

Plenty warm enough to just have a shirt on. This was a block of flats as well, so presumably they benefit from the heating of the neighbours.

Has anyone noticed that the goods for sale at all those stores seem to be a variety of frozen fish stood upright?

The middle box seems to contain what looks like a Pike?

I presume when it's that cold there is no need for chillers or a freezer!,

Aren't their summers actually quite warm - mid 30s? Only last for about a month but must be bizarre living somewhere with such extremes of temperature.

Oh, ok! Guess the building has decent insulation.

I appreciate I was stating the bleeding obvious, but my point was I wonder if that is how they display the fish ( if they are fish? ) for sale!

Sorry if I am not up to your elite standards, I was just genuinely curious!

Isn't this the coldest city in the world though, so they will have infrastructure to be able to work away in that.

Amazing temperature lows and yet life goes on clearly. We'd be in a mess here in the UK if it got to that level I bet.

First year we went to Saariselka it dipped to -47 one night.

The locals were taking about hearing the logs that made up their homes cracking in the cold. We were moaning about the bottle of Port that had frozen in my back pack having walked up to the top of the mountain to spend the night watching the lights.

First and only time I have formed ice on eyelashes and brows!

Can you imagine the news readers!!

'We are expecting a catastrophic weather explosion with temperatures plummeting down to minus 40°c, there is a high level red one alert over the entire country, the windchill factor could wipe out most of the population, Chester council have run out of salt.'

I was in the middle of a frozen lake at -37 once.

Not amused.

I was layered up and all sorts but i'm sure my lungs were frozen on the inside.

Ironically, that night I burnt myself on the hot coals in the sauna.
