When I was growing up in the seventies and eighties the person who crept around children's houses at night was called Father Christmas.

Now all I hear is Santa. Not even sure I've heard anyone refer to Father Christmas so far this year.

When did this happen?!?

Glad I'm not the only one.

I cringe every time - need to get over it!

According to my 4 year old its Father Kissmas!
He also thinks Daddy & Father Christmas are best mates after i made him a personalised video to him from Father Christmas.

It's amazing how when they really believe you know 'him' that the slightest threats of telling 'him' when they're being naughty instantly turns to good behaviour.

Both names get used here. My 4 year old was discussing the fact he had met several Santas over the past few weeks, I said that he has a lot of helpers. He said "I know dad, they are clones" eek

Father Christmas is the English "Protestant" take on the character.

In other countries, the more traditional Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus has been retained. In Ireland he was only ever referred to as Santa Claus - except in Gaelic where he is called "Daddaí na Nollaig" - which translates, oddly enough, into "Father Christmas".

Go figure - as they say.

As a kid in the 60s it was always Santa Claus, Father Christmas came later and is IMO wrong, Santa Claus is an adaptation of St Nicholas so makes more sense to me.

Dubliners often refer to "Santy" - as in "What did Santy bring ya?".
