You know these big holes they keep finding in the Universe that they have trouble explaining? Well, I've just worked out that the Earth sees about 0.000000045% of the Sun's rays. What's to say that advanced civilisations haven't found ways of harnesing their star's energy and not let most of it go shooting off into Space like we do? If they did, it would appear to be a big empty space to casual observers such like us.

They'd need quite a large box to keep it all in. Mind you, wouldn't the best way of preventing all that energy from just being wasted be to simply paint the other side of the sun black?

At the other end of the Renault scale to Roper's new toy I'm currently pottering around in an '02-vintage 1.6 Mk1 Megane as a courtesy car while the scooby gets a stern talking to at the garage. While I have the usual gratitude to have been given a courtesy car (it really does make my life so much easier and it's one of the reasons why this garage keeps getting my business) good god the Megane is awful! The engine seems about average for a 1.6 petrol to be fair but I'm reluctant to really utilise the full mediocraty of said engine as the brakes are generally quite weedy. It "handles" like a slimy ball of cotton wool, the gearbox manages to feel feel both vague when moving between the gears and recalcitrant to actually go into a gear when you find one. The whole interior, switchgear etc. feels like if someone has a moderate sneeze inside it the whole damn thing will just revert to an untidy pile of components. I know it's not really fair to consider it a 2002 car as the model came in in '95 but comparing to other mid-nineties cars I've driven I'm pretty sure it would have been terrible then!

My experience of French cars is limited to owning a 2CV which was extraordinarily good fun but hard work, owning a Peugeot 1.9 GTI which was hilarious and one of the best cars ever and Citroën Xantia company cars at an outfit I was with in the 90s which were fine and handled well.

It was ropier when swapped for a worse RS turbo.

Ours was fairly good. I think I'm fairly in tune with cars and the merest "tick tick" noise had me stopped and at the side of the road in a couple of seconds. Too late. Head gasket. That was when the car decided its engine was from a Citroën and awkward and expensive to fix with many special tools required. £700 including skimming the head. For a head gasket.

I'm not a fan of French cars in general if I'm honest - I've owned a couple and driven a fair few more but this Megane really is a POS... it makes my Clio feel like a Rolls Royce by comparison!
