I went to a local Japanese festival the other week, and they had various street food stalls. Part of my lunch was squid on a stick - literally. 1 whole squid, flattened out and barbecued on a large bamboo skewer. Yummy!

I don't think you can get bamboo large enough for yours : I'd slice him into rings and fry them.
