I always pick up coins I've dropped. Why wouldn't you? If you don't it's sheer laziness, unless you've got a disability. And, as has been said, technically it's dropping litter, and punishable with a fine, which would be more than you've dropped.

I walk looking down all the time, it's amazing how much you can pick up. Found a tenner once. And as for people who pay by card for everything - think of the retailer. They have to pay a charge to their business bankers for every card transaction, whether it's a debit card or a credit card. Even for small amounts, it all adds up - the shop I work for pays charges of about £2/300 per month because people can't be bothered to get cash out of an ATM.
And I guess taking cash to the bank is free for all retailers isn't it??!!

I get your point, but I'm talking about the fast-food industry. They pay suppliers and staff in cash. Bank transactions are anathema. I'm not talking tax evasion, just that they don't HAVE to pay in cash taken over the counter, they've got the choice. You're right, every single bank transaction costs them something - it really p***es them. Why on earth would someone think it perfectly normal to pay for a bag of chips with a debit card? (That's just reminded me of an ancient Eric Sykes sketch, where he tried to use his chequebook to buy a stamp off Corky the postman (Derek Guyler).

Most shops I go into including my local corner shop have a tap and pay pad for items less than £20.

Thought I was doing them a favour using it confused

If you don't want to take card don't offer the facility to do so.

They are seriously considering about it. I still don't understand why people walk around without any cash on them. Would they pay for a packet of gum with a card?

By my calculation you would need to make 37,440 after tax to not pick up 5p in the street.

Assume it takes 10 seconds to pick up 5p and you work 40 hours a week for 52 weeksa year.

If you really want fun work backwards and work out how much Bill Gates could walk past and not care...

When there's a contact less reader, why wouldn't you? Haven't even got to open your wallet.

I know they exist, but I personally have never seen one. I've no idea what the bank charges the retailer for that particular gadget, but if they've installed it, presumably they weighed up the pros and cons.

Really? Loads of shops have them now. Basically the same as a card payment machine but with a contactless sign on them. Heck, I think McDonalds have them too (well, the one I was at the other day did because I used it)

I live in a smallish town in Northern Ireland. Locals visit the town on Saturday in their tractors. Nuff said.

They're everywhere here, far more convenient than going to a cash point, in fact the last time I had any money on me whatsoever was probably around June.

Pretty much everywhere has them around here, including the quid shops.

Same here, I hate "cash"; two reasons:

  1. I hate both coins and notes in my pocket, I just don't like them being there, it feels odd
  2. If there are coins or notes in my pocket I spend them on crap to get rid of them; if the guys at work fancy some crap for lunch and I have cash on me I'll pitch in and contribute to some crap for lunch, if I haven't got cash on me I'll decline and have my home made salad.

I had a colleague that would scan the floor for loose change that had been dropped, he reckoned that it'd help him retire early, he did indeed retire early, very early because of mental health problems.

So what happens if you want to buy a Mars bar (say) in a corner shop in the middle of nowhere?

Anything under 10p gets left on the floor with anything under 50p getting put into a charity box of sorts.

I live in the west Midlands, there is no middle of nowhere. Plus the nearest cash point to me that doesn't charge £2 to get your own cash out is a mile away.

It's just easier to tap the pad, no faffing with PINs, I just shop and go hehe

I can't believe that anyone on here wouldn't be bothered to bend down an pick up 5p if they knew they had dropped it on the floor, even the well built PH company directors......
