I remember doing catering on the Henley Regatta. Liberally stuffed with utter Tossers. Rich Tossers too, so the amount of banknotes just dropped and discarded in the mud was quite staggering.
I was on Epsom racecourse the morning after The Derby(?) There were a number of people walking round with metal detectors picking up money and valuables. The Mad Monk said:

Always pick up any size coin.
Saying that, I only save £5 notes (as they are the smallest) they get folded and put into one of those ceramic containers you have to break. I've not spent a fiver in 18 months. I have to stuff them in with a knife now but I still think there's a fair bit of room.
Even 2 a week is £520 a year so I have no idea what's actually in it.
Edit: For this reason, cash points that give out £5 notes really piss me off.

How much commission do those coin star machines take?
Is there a charge to use a Coinstar machine? We charge a 9.9% coin processing fee for cash transactions (but, fees may vary by location). There is a 7% charge for charity donations. The fee is deducted from the amount poured at the time of your transaction.

I'm amazed that people say cash encourages them to spend more. I find the opposite. I use my cards for fuel and internet shopping, but other than that it's cash all the way. I always have around £100 on me. I find I spend far less using cash than cards. Especially stuff I don't really need but take a shine to.
My wife's the same. Day to day she pays for everything in cash.
