I really can't understand the appeal with branding oneself with what is such a negative image? Nothing epitomises 'Jeremy Kyle' more, than tattoos.

As for the, "but mine is a well thought out design by Kamil, which is a design very personal to me" argument. Unless, you pay any attention to it it, they don't look any different to the all the others that seem to be daubed on (what seems to be) 50% of the population. I can't understand why you would aspire to look like that?

Depends on the tattoo I think.

For ultra council-chic, get an essay in spidery font written on your torso somewhere:

This kind of crap:

nono For true ultra council-chic, there needs to be an obvious spelling mistake.

I'm approaching middle age and find the proliferation of tattooing over the last decade or so quite a strange cultural phenomenon. I have a sister in law who is my age and has some very strange tattoos, like latin verses and daft facebook-esque meaningless slogans, but I do have friends and colleagues with tattoos that I find quite attractive and interesting, I'm not sure I'd want to look at them 24/7 though. People don't seem to get just one though do they? It seems to be some kind of compulsive or addictive behaviour about them, people keep going back for more, I'm sure there is some deep rooted psychological cause to this, other than just being a fashion.

I reckon that by default, I'm now cool because I don't have a tattoo unlike everyone else on the planet smile
True. It used to be that one would stand out by having a tattoo. Now, it appears to be far more unique to have none.

Happy to be cool by not conforming. thumbup

I got a couple of small tattoos on my back when I was about 20, back then they were fairly rare and as mentioned only sailors, rock stars and slightly dodgy people got them. Probably rebellion and being into rock music at the time inspired me to get them got them done at a shop in Edinburgh that was probably the only tattoo shop in the city at the time.

Don't regret them one bit but glad I decided to get them on my back and not anywhere else, they've been on 23 years now and most of the colour has faded quite a bit.

Took the kids to a swimming pool in a nearby God-awful town (reason - it has slides) and it was chav tattoo heaven (hell). Saw a number of scripts with obvious spelling mistakes and/or glaring grammatical errors. Really wanted to point them out, but thought better of it.

Amongst the other sights were writing around men's navels, presumably done when the men were in shape, now existing in weird, warped form around the peak of a huge beergut. Amusing.

I'm quite heavily tattooed.

I have a very good, customer facing job.

My boss didn't know I had any tattoos until ~18 months into starting.

Fancy that wink

Maybe people should worry less about other peoples appearance, habits and interests? I know all we PHers are pretty perfect well built CEOS, but how we do love to gaze down from our lofty steeds.

I used to have an Impreza.

They look a bit chav. Mine was white, with gold wheels, and a pink badge on the front.

But mine was a well thought out car, very personal to me. By that I mean, it had an uprated turbocharger, uprated intercooler, race clutch, uprated suspension etc.

It was really nice for me to drive, I really enjoyed it.

To everyone else, it probably looked chav.

Thing is, I didn't give a fk about what anyone else thought about it. I didn't buy it for anyone else.

Tattoos are similar.
But clearly you wouldn't choose to have that Impreza today so you've got rid of it.

See the difference?

I have a tattoo, had it for nearly 10 years, have it on my left shoulder blade so it is nearly always covered. I live on a 50/50 council estate, I did not when I had it done. I will be getting another.

I am 30 if that makes any difference, I have two solid careers.

I do on the other hand, shudder when I see one of those script tattoos as normally they are miss-spelt, have grammar errors or a in-correct quotes or quotes so far removed from the context they were made it makes no sense. I have seen some truly, truly awful ink and some beautiful artwork.

Different strokes for different folkes. But being a snobby bd about it isn't cool!

So, I guess you don't still have the Imprezza? Would you say your tastes have matured?

I know it is very much de rigeur to look down on the lower orders here but from what I can see, tattoos pretty much cut across all categories for people up to middle age. Personally I think 99% of them look st but happily I don't have any and I couldn't really care less what others do to themselves.

A bit sanctimonious, KH? I don't generally worry much about other people's appearance, but I do reserve the right be amused if, for example, someone has gone out with their trousers on back to front, or wearing odd shoes, or.... have gone to the trouble of having something 'profound' permanently written on their bodies, but haven't taken a minute to check the spelling.
