combis are st. If you've got a modern pressurised tank then it's cheap to keep it full with hot. Combis are more about space-saving.
Depends on your circumstance. Other than a shower I have little need for hot water the rest of the day, seems a waste to heat a whole tank when you won't use all of it..
You only heat the tank once, the energy required to keep it to temperature is minimal.

They are very well insulated

Isn't it also about the need for more hot water than a tank can hold?

You only heat the water once with a combi.
If you're only washing up, or having a shower, you are heating a lot less water than heating a tankfull.

That reminds me of some of the comments you see on recipe websites:

"This is such a fantastic recipe! I added potatoes and peas, used stock instead of water, then added loads of spices and swapped the chicken for steak. 5 stars!"

My wife makes spaghetti Bolognese about twice a month . I am very lucky she often cooks for me . She makes it the same way each time . It never ever ever tastes the same . Sometimes good, sometimes fantastic, sometimes not so good.
We often speak about it , wow this one is good or nice but not quite so tasty this time .
I asked why it was always different and she said she never uses a recipe, just makes it up that day .

And why wouldn't she? I make a bolognese sauce a couple of times a month and it often depends on what veg I left in the fridge, if there's the remains of a bottle of red wine (very rare) etc.

Tip from the Mrs and me - if you are making such sauces, make them the previous day and leave them 24 hours in the fridge for the flavours to meld. It gives you much more depth of flavour.

I used to do that with lasagne, every month for 30 years, until I served one up that was like soup.

I went back to the original operating procedure (recipe) to re-learn how to do it.

+1

I don't cook very often, but when I do, it'll be a very large pot of either chilli or spag bol (always the same recipe). We'll eat it on the day, then the next day, the rest is split up into around 10 meals and frozen. The ones eaten later from the freezer invariably taste better, as the flavours have had chance to develop.

Getting my two youngest ready for bed the other day, the older of the two is a complete wimp with bugs and started to fuss about what was in the bath.

My other half goes, "Oh stop flapping, they're just ear-piggy-wigs!!". Which I overheard and immediately burst out laughing. She sort of dismissed me like I was the nutter. They were woodlice!!

I pressed her on the topic once the chimps were in bed and she claimed her cousin used to call them, 'penny pigs' which I have never heard of and Google didn't back that as a common nickname. Either way she was talking b*llocks unless someone can corroborate haha.

only for pathetically weak old school tank systems. The new ones are huge and cold to the exterior touch. I'm not sure what I'd have to be doing to run out of hot water but it has never happened yet. As opposed to the 1980s where this sort of thing used to happen regularly with tank systems.

Combis are also massively failure prone.

Fair enough, but I've only ever had to replace one - the previous one lasted 19 years and the replacement was £550 including VAT and delivery, fitted for forty quid in about three hours.
(Plumber mate doing a homer).
But to keep on-topic, Mrs 404 asked not so long ago where the hotwater tank was. Last I saw of it, it was on a scrappies Transit flatbed bouncing down the driveway 24 years ago.
